PLEASE HELP!! (this is long)

Hi,

My boxer is a male, he'll be 2 in February and he's had so many medical issues from allergies to stomach problems. He's been on Temerall - P, an antihistamine, straight prednisone, then pepcid and an antibiotic because he developed a stomach infection from the Temerall - P.

Last night, my husband and I were eating dinner and I gave him a chip (which I always do) and all of a sudden he started heaving. He started jerking his head down and foward, his tongue was coming all the way out and he just kept licking everything....his nose, the carpet, the couch, the wall. I thought immediately "oh my god....I made him choke" so i started rubbing his neck and giving him water and cheese and it seemed to have stopped. Well, this went on all night. He's done this before also....once before and i honestly don't think it's related to the chip....I think that was coincidental. He did chew it. But.....he began throwing up (which he does a lot)....the first round was chunky (not to be gross) but it was all un-chewed food which happens, the second round was watery but the color of his food and then the ones after that were white and goopy....lines. It didn't seem like he was trying to get something up so I don't know what to think. Tyson has a very weak tummy and we know what he can and can't have and give him things in moderation, I believe the pepcid upset his stomach but I'm nto sure.......

It could be any number of things and I'm worried to take him to the vet because #1 - they are going to give him another medication and I don't want him on meds becaus after 5 days he starts throwing up and #2 - they really don't know what is wrong with him.

My husband and I want to wait for his system to completely empty of all meds that have been prescribed to him and see how he does. Before he was put on the prednisone....he was fine (except for the allergies).

Is this normal? Is this a boxer thing? Could he be allergic to prednisone and then have a reaction to the pepcid which the vet told me to put him on??

He was also on Prescription Diet (Hills') wet food but it is so expensive that we can't afford to just feed him that and that was for the stomach infection.....(he's also NOT a big eater).

Any suggestions? Food......or otherwise??'

Poor boy-did he do better on the Hill's? A sensitive stomach will most likely require some special food. Has he been allergy tested? Perhaps he has an allergy to something common that he is ingesting in a number of ways (my boy is allergic to wheat for instance). I think you need to consult your vet or find one that can diagnose him properly. Also, do you intend to stop all his meds at this point? I would want to do that under a vet's care as well as some of that stuff he should be weaned off of-not stopped abruptly if you see what I mean. My boy has been on Temaril as well but I have to wean him off according to my vet. Hope things get better for you and your pup

he seemed to do better on the Hill's.....but again....he's not a big eater. I stopped the prednisone under the vet's care....he did say to stop that and he said to to go the drug store and give him 2 doses of regular OTC Pepcid - 2 pills 2x a day for 1 day and stop all other meds and give him a bland diet and I did that and he was fine and then all of a sudden he started in again.

I will speak to the vet and see what he says....it's just very frustrating and hurtful to watch them doing this and they can't tell you what they are feeling or what is going on....you just feel so helpless....

What was the bland diet? Boiled chicken and rice, or something similar? And did the vomitting occur whilst he was on that, or after his return to his usual food?

One thing worth considering is that the problem may lie with the food (and a lot of dogs have trouble with Hills prescription diets, also ).

I can't really pin point it.....it came on suddenly and like I said it could be any number of things that I thought of.....the pepcid, the food, the chip, etc....I didn't know about the problems with Hill's so I will look into that.

By bland diet....the last time he said that...it meant just to feed him the Hill's Prescription Diet wet food only which is what I did....

Any suggestions on food?

He's currently on Nutro Max - Lamb and Rice Small Chunks. He has a food allergy and they told me no beef.

First stop with the chips. Junk food has no place even in a healthy dog and why sabatoge a sensitive tummy. When getting off pred you need to wean off not stop cold turkey. I think if you control better what the dog eats you will eliminate a lot of your grief.

My boy Clyde who passed away several years ago had a sensitive tummy also. This may sound like a pain, but I used to mix rice in his food and it seemed to help. It also encouraged him to eat. My vet suggested it, but check with yours first. My Clyde didn't have to take pepcid.

Hi there,

My boy also has a ensitive tummy. He had Pancreatitis a few months back and since then has had two bouts of an unknown problem with his tummy.

I tried the Hills and although Thai did well on it, I didnt like it at all, but it did help for the initial period.

Then I tried a couple of other premium foods to no avail. Finally my vet suggested it may be IBS orCOlitis. She recommended putting him on Probiotics which help put the friendly bactiera back in the tummy. I guess, a bit like humans when we are on antibiotics they upset the good bactiera in our belly.

So I started him on this, a shock treatment to start with to really give him a boost. Now Ive cut back to every other day and (touch wood) he has finally come good. A couple of days ago I noticed he was a bit off and not eating, so I gave him a few doses of Probiotics again and he cleared right up.

It might be worth a try anyway. You can buy them from normal health food shops or your local pet supplies.
