I got my boxer puppy Capone's ears clipped, and I am having HUGE taping issues. Does anyone have any advice on good taping that gives great results? I'm willing to try anything at this point. Even when I have the surgeon that performed the clipping tape them, it doesn't last more than one night.

Help!

I feel so sorry for you! I had the exact same problem with my boy. I had trouble with his taped ears falling in. I repeatedly asked the vet/staff to help me and took him multiple times to be retaped and they told me not to worry things would be fine. Well after 2 months of taping one ear was fine but the other basically laid on top of his head...I was furious at them for not being willing to retape them upright every time I took him in after all the money I paid. Anyway, eventually I gave up taping his ears myself and let them go and somehow (I'm still not sure how) his ear began to stand on it's own. So don't despair but don't let them tell you things will be fine. I'm sure had I not worked so hard on keeping them upright the cartilege in his ears would have "grown" accustomed to the wrong position. If they're falling inward let me know and I'll tell you what help me keep them upright./ On the upside...my first boxer we had trouble simply keeping the tape on his ears but had no problem getting them to stand immediately. So good luck to you and your pup!!!

It's a weird combination... one ear always tapes pointing slightly outward from the head (which is not good!) and the other one tapes fine upward as long as it stays taped...

I can usually use some of that "vet tape" that sticks to itself instead of being adhesive to go over the actual tape to make them stay. If I could just find a way to get them taped exactly upright, it would definitely work. They are well on their way, the bottom part of the ear cartiledge is already supportive, but it needs to stay taped for a while longer.

Also, what's good to use for 'stays' inside the ear besides tampon tubes??

The best thing would be for you to find a breeder to show you how to wrap the ears and help you get started. It can be a long process, especially if you have the long show cut, which takes more time to stand. What I've used is the tampon method; here is a brief breakdown of the process, hopefully you will be able to understand. There are other methods out there, too, but I'm not as familiar with them.

I used Zonas surgical tape, but I understand they don't make it any more. You need to find a porous, breathable, surgical tape for this.

1. Wrap tape around the middle of the tampon so it won't telescope inside itself.

2. Wrap more tape inside out, around the entire tampon, starting from the botton up to the top tightly so the outside of the tampon is completely wrapped in tape, sticky side out.

3. Put the bottom of the tampon in the "bell" (base) of the ear as firmly as you can. Stretch the rest of the ear up against the sticky tape of the tampon.

4. Cut some more pieces of tape, you need about three or four about 3 to 4 inches.

5. Starting at the bottom of the ear, wrap the first piece of tape around the ear and tampon, in the direction towards the center of the dog's head. (The right ear would be wrapped counterclockwise, the left is clockwise.) Continue wrapping with the additional tape pieces until you have reached the top of the ear.

6. DO NOT wrap the tip (or the whole thing for that matter) of the ear too tightly so that the circulation gets decreased or cut off. I've heard horror stories about people losing the tips of their dog's ears because of this.

7. Do not twist the ear as you wrap it, keep it straight up against the tampon.

8. Leave the ears for five days, on the fifth day in the morning, take the tampons out and let the ears be free for that day. Rewrap again that evening for five more days.

9. Don't get frustrated because when the puppy is teething, the calcium seems to go to the teeth and the ears are likely to droop. Holly's ears were terrible when she broke her leg and was healing. When she was well, they stood again. But I just kept wrapping them.

10. It helps if you have one person hold the dog and feed it hot dog pieces while you are taping.

There are other methods available, you can try searching on the internet and might find a site with pictures that help you more. After you've done it a few times, it does get easier.

Hope this isn't too confusing, but it is the method I was taught and that I've used for both Holly and Scrapper.

When the ears are finally done, except for the very tips, you can glue Breathe-Rite strips in with "SkinBond" adhesive at the ends and that helps them stand.

Good luck.

I used window caulk tubing (not sure of the exact name) which I cut to size and taped up. You can get it at any Home Depot or Lowes stores. It is gray and round and a little flexible, but it works really well once taped up. You may also need to a section off the end which goes into the ear (so it is not quite round) to ensure a better fit. Otherwise we pretty much followed the directions given above.
My breeder uses this on all of his dogs and it seems to work really well.

Scrapper's Mom,
This is very similar to what we've been doing, but your tips are VERY helpful. I just hope we can get them to stay!

If anyone else has any other advice, please let me know...

I know it's frustrating and sometimes seems like the ears will never stand. Just be patient and keep up the posting. There will come a time when you will notice that the ears are not quite so wobbly and are firming up. It won't hurt to tape longer than you think may be necessary, but it will affect the outcome if you quit too soon. Scrapper had to be taped until he was 8 mos. old and Holly will be 9 mos in a few days and I just quit taping her ears about a month ago. I still use the Breathe-Rite strips on her, though!

taping during shows?

if you keep your boxers ears taped for 5days and then let breath for a day, what do you do if you go to a show? do you keep them taped or untape them?
katie

definately untaped. Lots of pups still need to be taped while they're being shown, but when they are in the ring, nothing can be on their ears. Take them off right before.. take off as much of the sticky tape stuff, then re-post. If he's showing for more than a day (ie: weekend of more) breathe-rite them just to a full-posting after the show is completely done. Judges will understand if a pups ears are not completely up yet. :)
