First off, I just have to ask... did you research the breed before you got a boxer?? If you did then you should've known that boxers, especially the younger ones are very energetic to say the least. What exactly is she doing that is so terrible to where you're going to lose your patience??

Also, have you enrolled in an obedience class?? Obedience classes won't necessarily make your dog more quiet and calm, but it will teach you the proper way to train her.

More info on what exactly she's doing that is so wrong will get you the advice on what to do.

I also suggest obedience classes. Lots of exercise.

Also get a copy of "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell at your local book store. You will find a great deal of very valuable information in that book on how to calm your dog

There is also a book section here at Boxerworld which you should check into.

A thread was recently posted in the Boxer Ring asking for suggestions for winter exercise. Here's the link...

I live in New Hampshire where it gets very cold as well. To keep Riley's boredom down, I just play with him and play with him some more. We go outside for short sessions and then we play some more inside. No, I don't play with 100% of the time that we're inside, because I've got stuff that I have to do, but most of the time I'm entertaining him.

Here are some of the things that I do when it's to cold to go for walks or play outside...

- I have wrestling matches with him. Riley really enjoys a good wrestling match, as I do to. Our matches usually go on for about about a half hour before one of us gets tuckered out. I actually just got done a good match with him and he's currently snoozing up on the couch.

- Play hide n' seek. Playing this game will also help teach a few commands (sit or down, stay, come). Basically just put her in a stay position and go hide. Once you're hidden, call her to you. If you plan to hide in a tough spot to find, bring a squeek toy so you can squeek it when she gets "cold".

- Hide treats or toys around the house. This will teach her how to use her nose and to find things. I would keep track of how many and where you put them though just to make sure she found them all.

- If you don't have time or if you're to tired to play games, offer her a bone to knaw on. Riley gets the occassional soup bone and this keeps him occupied for at least an hour!! In that time, I'm free to do some housework or something else that I want to do. He also enjoys Jumbones, but those only last about a half hour. I've also heard that knawing on bones burns energy as well.

Just be creative and keep things fun and interesting for her.

Tug Tug Tug! :p A good game of tug will wear out your baby. Heck even I get tuckered out after tug and Rocks and I usually end up napping LOL LOL

Also if you have stairs and your baby plays fetch, throw the toy up/down the stairs. Running those stairs also burns off some energy. Rocky is always proud of himself when he brings the toy back up the stairs and he will prance it over to me :D

Mandy has some very good ideas that she gave you. Hide-N-Seek is super easy to teach and boxers ususally catch on quickly the concept of the game. Rocky loves to play hide-n-seek and we have progressed to tougher spots, such as hiding in closets.

At night after playing and right before bedtime Rocks always gets something to chew. Either a frozen kong (which he'll get tonight) a frozen bone stuffed with cheese, or a soup bone. This keeps him busy for something and after he is finished he is ready to call it a night. Good luck, you have another two years before your baby will settle down so learn as many tricks as you can! :p

Ok Andie, I know what a Kong is and I know what a soup bone is. What do you mean by a frozen bone stuffed with cheese?? Is it an actual bone that you buy at a store and stuff it yourself?? I'm always trying to think of new treats for Riley. Especially treats that'll last him more than 5 minutes to devour!!

I don't know if it is possible for you to find a playmate. I know Tanner is completely zonked after we come home from playing with my best friend's dog...she has a Lab. Talk about endurance!

This way you get the same sleepy puppy with only half the work!

Hey Sam
You are correct in saying it is cold outside, but it is going to get colder before this winter is over :D
We still take Kailee out for her walks and play, we just shorten the time outside. It still wears her out, as it seems the cold fresh air has a sedative effect on her ;) Also, you may want to invest in a dogcoat for your little girl. (I keep thinking her name is Chicca, but not sure, my memory is....well you know. } But at least with a good warm coat, she can still go for walks and runs outdoors. I bought Kailee's coat, actually I ordered it, from an Equine supply store in Caledon Ontario, called In The Ribbons. You just send her the measurments for your girl and within a few days the coat is made!! It resembles a horse warmup blanket, but the thing I like about it is it also covers Kailee's chest. Trust me in the middle of winter Kailee appreciates this coat, and after a nice cold walk outside I am amazed at the body heat that comes off of her when I take off the coat.

Sorry I didn't describe it :p It is called "Buddy's Big Bone" by Sunpet toys and it is awesome if you have a chewer. We have had it over a year now and Rocky still hasn't destroyed it. You can stuff the ends of it, which is what I do. I stuff the ends with velveeta cheese and freeze it. It lasts Rocks a good while and he loves it :) Here is the link when I posted about it and Aimee supplied the website. If you scroll down you will see the bones on the right side. I fully recommend them!
