Sarge loves to play fetch. He will chase after anything bones, balls, frizebees, etc. He does know the release command and is ok at doing it, however I bought him a flying squrel from pet smart (it's like a frizebee but eaiser for him to pick up) when he drops it for me he steps on it with one paw putting all of his weight on it. He then gives me the look you know the "get it if you can" look. I just take it from him and make him sit stay and toss it again.

Avra loves to play fetch and she understood very well the "leave it",but people at the park and also my husband said" leave it" and at the same time they were pulling the toy,so Avra which prefer to play tag-o-war better than fetch didn't drop it and one day i realized that she would drop it if i would say"leave it,to put it in the bag" so,now i use this phrase and she always drop her toy ;) and i let my husband and other people to play tag-o-war and say...leave it ...leave it..leave it ...why she doesn't leave it ;)

Thanks for all the advice. I tried some of them last night. He seemed to respond to me telling him to drop it and if he didn't then I ignored him. Pretty soon he would drop it. He's really smart so I don't think it will take him long to be reliable with droping it when he brings it back. I want to enroll him in a class to refresh his sit, down, stay, and come commands. He does them 75% of the time. Which is good considering these are skills he came with when I adopted him. Less work for me. :) I'll being getting him in a class as soon as I come back from vacation and am done with all the over time at work. But we'll keep practicing the drop it so he'll get really good at fetch. Thanks agian!

Mason is always bad at the drop part - so I tried treats and he, like Sarge, will drop the toy for atreat, but after a couple of times he figured out what I was doing and put all his weight on it so I couldn't take it while he ate the treat! My sly little monster!!!

i tried the "drop it" and treat with Nitro when he was only 8 week but that didn't work lol... for Nitro a game of fetch is fetch then tug of war hehehe... he was about 9 1/2 weeks when he tried to assert his alpha position by growling at me everytime i try to take the toys from him, that's when i usually end the game... i was told that if the dogs play tug of war with you that you make sure that you win the tug of war or else the dog will think he's the boss between the two of you... so one day we were playing fetch which usually turn to tug of war, i told Nitro to "let go" but instead he decided to pull harder, knowing i can't loose this one i decided to pull harder (well i guess i pull it to hard)... Nitro went airborne, did a complete summersault and landed on his back and head... now Nitro will just drop it or let go of it if my hands get close to the toy heheheh...
