Playa Del Carmen

Just a quick note to see if anyone has been to Playa Del Carmen and if so what are some of the best places to go. I'm going to be there for a week at the end of the month. Thanx in advance!

Playa del Carmen is really nice at this time of year. I spent several months living in Mexico a couple of years ago, and went to Playa del carmen a couple of times. There's not a lot of people there at this time of year and its warm enough for the beach, without being too hot. I can't really remember any specific places we spent time. We really just wondered around and asked advice from the people who live there. Hope you have a great vacation.

My brother and sis in law have gone there for the past two years, and they absolutely love it. They go in June, tho, so I don't know what the weather would be like now. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Where will you be staying while you are there? I went almost a year ago. You HAVE to take the ferry to Cozumel!!! I stayed at Paraiso Lindo and it is the most amazing place to stay. We spend a lot of time in Mexico (from there) and Playa Del Carmen is one of my favorites.

I will be staying at the Gran Porto Real, and is actually my third trip to Mexico. I have stayed in Ixtapa and Mazatlan on other occasions. Are there any attractions that are must see's? I will defiently take in Cozumel as I scuba dive.

I would definitely go to Chichen Itza. I think it is like an hour or less from Playa. I didn't make it last time I went but I have heard that it is incredible. Who takes you scuba diving?

Oh we haven't set up the diving yet, we're waiting to see where, when, and who we feel comfortable with when we get there. Should be fun though, the only diving I have done is lakes here in MN so the clarity should be awesome.

We went to playa del carmen last year. We stayed at the iberostar. There were wild monkeys at our resort that constantly had domestic disputes. You would see them run over building rooftops figting over children and stuff. The iberostar also had lots of peacocks. Just down the beach from the iberostar is a little cove with lots of fish and coral. One little tiny fish attached himself to me. I tried to get away (I was scared at first that he was so close to me...) but he would NOT let me. I stayed with him in teh water for about 2 hours, he stayed tucked in right under my chin. When I eventually had to get out he followed me all the way to the beach. I think he felt safe from all the big fish near me. I felt SO bad leaving him there.

The resort was the best part of playa del carmen. We went into the town there some for some shopping but things were really expensive compared to the other places we have been. We didnt make it out to cozumel. WE love snorkeling, and there was none in playa del carmen. WE were going to try cozumel but I had my digital camera stolen while we were there.... so we figured we had best save the money so I could buy another digital camera when we got home.

If you ever go on another trip.... we took an all inclusive to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. It was tremendous. Tons of snorkeling right off the beach.... we ran out in the dominican roads and met lots of locals. IT was the best experience! Highly reccomended!

Chichen Itza and Uxmal are both close enough for day trips. Tulum is even closer and beautiful, its (I believe) the only Mayan ruins right on the ocean. All of the ruins are well worth the trip. Xcaret is also not too far away - its an ecological park, has some Mayan ruins (a ball court) and a reconstructed Mayan village. There is also an underground river you can float/swim through there and you can swim with the dolphins.
