Shannon,

When we first started looking for a pup we checked with Emberstouch and Jayde gave our name to Lisa. They definitely must be close. How long have you been waiting for a pup now? You must have been so upset about what happened with the first litter you were on the list for.

It is starting to get weird how many things are alike with our conversation. The father of our pup is.... you guessed it Joey. He is an absolutely beautiful boy and so friendly. From what I have heard about Codi he is amazing and has a great temperment. He must be great if he has all of these litters planned.

Are you going to be crate training Marley?

When I have a few more minutes (I am supposed to be ironing clothes for the wedding we are going to this afternoon) I will e-mail you. It will be great to have someone who is going through the same things at the same times.

Talk to you later

Heather,
Wow! What a coincedence! I can't believe Joey is the dad of your boy. How weird is that! We were definitely devastated when we found out that only 3 puppies survived in Tori's litter. I felt bad for ourselves, for Tori, and for Jayde! I mean what a shock. She had homes ready for all the pups too, so she had to break the news to 4 other families. I literally cried when she told me because we had waited for three weeks and during that time, Jayde and I exchanged many e-mails discussing how Tori was doing, and getting all the details of getting the puppy to us, etc. So it was a MAJOR letdown. The only nice thing was that she had Codi's next litter due a month later so we didn't have to wait too much longer. If it had been six more months of waiting, it would have been torture!

We've been waiting for one of her puppies since my birthday, April 3rd. I started looking for breeders in the middle of March. You may be wondering why we chose a breeder so far away. The first reason is that I love the look of Jayde's dogs. I'm a real fan of the black and reverse brindles, and I just think Codi is gorgeous. The second reason is that when I sent out e-mails to just about every Boxer breeder in California, I only heard back from about three. And I just didn't like any of them for one reason or another. Then Jayde responded to my message (she was the only one I sent one to who was out of the state and country) and she was very friendly, was great about answering all my questions, and she seemed like she really cared about her dogs. My husband thought I had lost my mind dealing with someone so far away, but for some reason, I felt pretty good about it. But I have had moments of thinking "Geez, I hope I'm doing the right thing here" and it has been so hard knowing I can't go see the litter and play with them and get a sense of who I like the best. You have definately made me feel better though with what you've said about Codi and Jayde. And it's wonderful to talk to someone who knows who I'm talking about.

We are definitely going to try to crate train Marley. We didn't with Apollo. We tried the first few nights with him but I have never heard a dog scream like that and it freaked me out, so we stopped. We crate trained our Pug and Boston and it has been wonderful! I put them in the crate together at night (it's a Large VariKennel) and whenever they need to be out of my hair for a few minutes. I also use it when I go to school for a couple of hours and the weather is bad, and I don't want to leave them in the backyard. It really has been an invaluable tool. We got Gizmo first and he was already used to a crate so he was easy and then when we got Mojo, he accepted the crate well because he was in there with Gizmo so he never had to be alone. So we'll see how easy it is with Marley. Boxers don't seem to like constraint of any kind, so I think it's harder for them. I'm just hoping Marley isn't traumatized by the flight here and then associates her crate with that trauma.

Have you decided whether you're going to crop Jackson's ears or not?
Sorry this is a NOVEL!

Shannon,

I am so lame. I am supposed to be getting ready for a wedding that I am leaving to go to in 20 minutes but look at where I am.. posting on boxerworld. Still have to dry my hair and get dressed but I am sure I can do it.

We are not getting Jackson's ears done. We won't be showing him and their ears are SO SOFT I just want to play with the ears. What about Marley's? How does it work shipping her down to you?

I have to say that I phoned my husband after your last post and we both thought it was so strange how we have dealt with the same people and same dogs but we live so far apart. The joys of the internet.

I will post more when I have time and am not going to make myself late for anything.

Have a GREAT day

Heather,
Hi. I hope you had a nice time a the wedding yesterday. I love going to weddings.

When I got the boxer board message that you had replied to my earlier message yesterday, I tried to access it on the board and the board was down last night. I was so bummed to have to wait 'til today. I drive my husband crazy with the amount of time I spend on the computer sometimes. First thing in the morning, and then several times a day, I check my e-mail. And I've been spending a lot of time on the boxer board and just looking at breeders' websites (to see all the pictures). My husband's new favorite saying is "Where's Mommy?" (he's asking the boys) and then he sais "Gee, let me guess, could she be on the computer AGAIN!" (he's such a smartass) I'm supposed to be baking chocolate chip cookies right now to bring to my dad's for Father's Day, and I'm doing this!

It is really amazing how many doors that the internet opens up for all of us, that we would have no access to otherwise. If it weren't for Jayde's website, I would never have imagined getting a puppy from so far away. But the thing that is neat is that I've never had a real reason to be interested in Calgary, Alberta specifically before (other than the fact that I'd love to see the west side of Canada since I've heard it is incredibly beautiful (I've been to Toronto and found it fascinating), but now I'm aware of a whole new place and have a connection with it and I think that is wonderful because it broadens your perspective.

You asked about shipping Marley down here, and to be honest with you, it is turning out to be a major pain in the butt! I keep having problems ordering her crate to be shipped to Jayde. The first order I placed couldn't be shipped the way I wanted it to because of the size. And the other two shipping options were either too expensive or would take too long. So I placed an order with a different online supply place and now they are telling me that they can't fill the order because the shipping address and the billing address have to be in the same country! So now it looks like I have to have Jayde purchase the crate and mat for me and send her the money for it. She's willing to do it, but we would have saved about $50 doing it the other way. It's definitely turning out to be more expensive by getting Marley from so far away. The cost to ship her to us will be about $100 American. But the worst of it is knowing she has to fly by herself for 5 hours and then when we pick her up at LAX, she has to wait until we get all the customs papers processed, and that will take another hour or two. To me it seems like it would be very traumatic for a puppy to go through that, but Jayde and I talked about it and she told she has shipped many puppies and they have come through it with flying colors. So I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

As far as having Marley's ears done, it's been a really hard decision for us. On the one hand, I love the look of their ears when they are cropped correctly (like Codi's). I personally don't like the look of the ears that stand straight up and look like horns. Also, when we had Apollo, he had chronic ear infections due to his floppy ears. It wasn't just him though. Every floppy-eared dog I've had has had ear infections here and there throughout their lives. Mojo, our pug, has had one I needed to take him to the vet for,and he's had many that tried to start but I prevented by cleaning his ears out regularly. On the other hand, our Boston (whose ears naturally stand up) has never had a problem. So in that respect, I think it's better for the dog to not have to deal with that potential discomfort throughout their lives. However, on the other hand, I've done research on the process of cropping and have come to learn that the aftercare is labor intensive, and can be painful and irritating to the dog (depending on their tolerance), and there are no guarantees that they will turn out the way you want them to. Plus I don't like the risk of anesthesia on top of everything. We won't be showing Marley either so I feel guilty about doing it for no real good reason. When I had each of my dogs neutered in the past, I've nearly cried because I couldn't stand the thought of them being in any kind of pain, so I know if we got her ears done, I'd probably blubber my brains out to see her in pain. I've decided I'm going to wait until she gets here to make the final decision. When I look her straight in the eyes, I'll be able to decide for sure what to do. But most likely, we won't have it done.

Is Jackson the first Boxer you've ever owned? If so, what made you decide to get one?

Sorry this so long again. I just love talking about this.

Hey Shannon,

The wedding yesterday was absolutely beautiful. Of course, I cried and everyone laughed at me. I told them it was a delayed reaction from our wedding which I didn't REALLY cry at (we got married Feb 3/01). It always is such a great moment when you see the bride make her entrance. She was breathtaking.

I hear you about boxerworld. Thank god we have an alarm on our house so when Mike opens the door it beeps. I have enough time to shut down boxerworld and pretend that I have been doing something else. Mike thinks I am pathetic but oh well. He should be used to it by now. I was an internet nut when we were planning the wedding.

I spent a lot of time looking at breeders websites as well. It was nice to be able to see what the dogs looked like and what was out there. We have met with 2 breeders in person and I have talked to 4 on the phone. I can't even begin to count how many breeders I e-mailed. It was crazy!

Every time I go into the chat room here it amazes me how many different people are on there and from such vastly different parts of the world. It is great that the common thread of boxers can bring so many people together.

The reason that I asked about shipping Marley is one of the girls that I worked with moved to Australia and she was having a heck of a time with shipping her dog. It was quite stressful to her. You may want to check with Matt (I think his user name is Marimat) He is quite an expert on shipping dogs. He may have some helpful hints.

Jackson is the first dog that Mike and I have had together (we had a ninja cat a few years ago but she got out one night and was never found again). Mike has always been a fan of the look of boxers. When we moved into our new house Mike had started working busy season when he works 7 days a week 14 hrs a day from April 1 - mid June. I had a really hard time adjusting to being in a new house and having no pets and I told him that he had a choice: we either had a baby, got a dog or got a cat. Very quickly he decided on the dog. He has had dogs before and every dog absolutely loves him so it was an easy decision.

I started to do research on boxers and I really liked what I read/heard. After about a month of research Mike phoned one night and said that there had been a boxer pup in his store and we "HAD" to get one. That is when I started trying to find a breeder. We finally found Lisa in mid May. When we met with the pups Mike wasn't able to go so on Monday night we are going to go and meet the pups and breeder again (I stocked up on film today). Hopefully we will be choosing OUR pup then.

Has Jayde been able to send you any pictures yet? Perhaps you should just tell her that I will come and pick up the pictures and scan them for you (just joking). I can't imagine how hard it is to be getting a pup in a few weeks but you haven't seen anything.

Mike is due to be home in about 5 minutes so I will have to go.

Look forward to talking to you.

Heather

BTW: If you do need any help getting pictures of your pup I would be more than willing to help you out any way I can. We have a scanner at home and it wouldn't be a big deal. Let me know.

Heather,

Hi. You are so sweet for offering to help me get some pictures, thank you. I do feel rather frustrated about not having seen the puppies yet. And to be honest with you, I'm not really sure what approach to take. That's why I told you that I feel so frustrated that I'm so far away. It's not like I can call Jayde up and say "we really want to come take a look at the puppies this weekend, can we?" I feel so helpless. I've been telling her since they were born four weeks ago that I'm dying to see pictures. The first few weeks after they were born, she was still taking care of the three puppies from Tori's litter so she really had her hands full, and I understood that maybe she didn't have time to take pics right away, get them developed, and then scan them. Then after a couple of weeks passed, and their eyes started opening, she said she wanted to wait a week or two until their eyes developed more because the flash was damaging to them. So finally, last weekend I sent her some pictures of me and Joe, the boys, and the dogs, and she told me she had pictures she was developing and would try to scan them that Sunday night. Then I didn't hear from her until the end of that week because her e-mail wasn't working. So now, I'm hoping for pictures anyday, but so far, no luck. Would you like to be an ambassador for me and go see the puppies?:) Just kidding, I wouldn't really ask you to do that.

So the wedding was beautiful huh? You and Mike are still newlyweds, CONGRATULATIONS!!! How long have you been together? I think I should have been a wedding planner because I just love everything about them. They are so pretty, festive and emotional. I love the decorations, the ambience, the dancing and music, alcoholic beverages (champagne in particular), the flowers, seeing the bride for the first time, etc., etc. For the longest time I was addicted to "A Wedding Story" on The Learning Channel (do you guys have that). If you don't get that, it's a half hour long show where a tv crew interviews and follows a couple planning their wedding. They talk about how they met and then at the end, they show their wedding. Then after I started getting tired of that, I started watching "A Baby Story" which is also a half hour long and a couple talks about how they met, getting pregnant, and then at the end they show the birth (in a very PG way). That show will give you major baby fever though and it was one of the main reasons I got pregnant with Tyler, so it's kind of dangerous.

Getting a dog, rather than having a baby, was a wise decision for now. Puppies are MUCH easier, and they won't ever tell you off after a certain age. My ultimatum to my husband was kind of the same as yours. I told him that I'm sick and tired of being the only female in this house and drowning in this constant sea of testosterone, so I told him either we get a female dog, or we try to have a baby girl (I was secretly hoping for the puppy) so he didn't hesitate and said we could get a dog.

So Jackson will be your first Boxer huh. You are definitely in for a treat. They are like no other dog in the canine world. They have such incredible personalities and you guys are in store for MANY laughs. I read other people's messages on here about them being really hyper and having problems with them being destructive, but I guess we got really lucky with Apollo since he was very mellow, and was pretty much a good boy most of the time. However, in retrospect, I wonder if his mellowness was partially due to his being sick all the time. If he had been a completely healthy puppy from the start, maybe he would have been more hyper. So to be honest with you, we may be in for a treat with Marley. But the looks they give you, the way they "talk" to you, and most everything else about them is so endearing. I was telling Jayde that the thing I look forward to the most is pinching Marley's jowls. I used to grab Apollo's droopy lips and look him right in the eyes and kiss him and he just loved it. And the funniest thing ever was when I used to take him for rides in the car and I'd put him next to me in the front seat with his seatbelt on and I'd look over at him and he'd just be sitting there like a human looking straight ahead out the window and sometimes he'd look over at me like "wassup mom, I'm just chillin over here checking out the scenes." We didn't get another Boxer until now because I was too afraid it would remind too much of Apollo, but I just got to the point where not having one seemed worse.

So the puppy you had posted the picture of may not be the one you end up getting?

Shannon,

If you would like me to go and look at the pups and take a picture of Marley for you I would be more than willing. I know how hard it would be if I was in your situation so if you need some help to be able to see your puppy just let me know. It must be incredibly frustrating. I have new film for our visit to the breeder tonight so it wouldn't be a big deal to add some pictures of your pup. Seriously let me know if there is anything I can do to help you out. As long as Jayde doesn't have a problem with it neither do I.

Mike and I have been together for 6 years in September so it wasn't a great surprise to anyone (except me) that Mike proposed. I had fun planning the wedding but there are so many things to plan that towards the end I was a basket case. I always think it is interesting how people personalize their weddings. The wedding we were at on Saturday gave each table a card and you had to write words of advice for them that were dependent on which year you had (each card was noted to be opened at different anniversaries, we had year 21).

I am the hugest fan of the wedding story (and the baby story). Mike always laughs at the fact that I cry at almost all the stories but I know none of the people. I am really bad for crying because some one else is crying.

It is definitely amazing how fast a guy can choose a dog over a baby. Not that I felt that we were ready to have a baby but I needed something in our house and having fish as pets doesn't count.

When we went and met with the first breeder (who we didn't end up going with) she had two adult boxers and I killed myself laughing at them. They were so funny and so full of personality. I did hear from this lady (not totally sure that it is correct) that male boxers are a lot more sucky than the females. She said her female dog would just go and do her thing (as long as she had a ball in her mouth) and the male always had to be with her. Mike didn't want a female but I was a little unsure. After hearing this it was a sure thing that we would get a male. What was wrong with Apollo? How long ago did he pass away? That must have been so hard. A couple of months ago we had to put down the family cat (which my mum had) and she was 18 years old (I still remember the day that we got her when I was 8). I came home that night and said I didn't want to get an animal because I never wanted to go through that. Mike brought me back to thinking rationally quite quickly by saying that if you never had an animal you would never have the joy that comes with having one. My mum also waited a while to get a new cat (she just got one last week). My mum thought that she would be able to go and pick one up right after Sophie was put down but she went to the SPCA and left in tears on more than one occassion.

We don't have any idea if we are getting that puppy or not. There are 3 black faced males and Lisa didn't say which one it would be. Hopefully we will know tonight. Mike is so excited to go since he didn't get to see them the first time. Yesterday he phoned me when he was at work and I was a little crabby/hungover so he said "Honey, if you start to get crabby today just remember that it is only 1 day until we get to go see Jackson" Before I left this morning we were saying "only 15 hours to go".

Okay, I have been at work for 1/2 hr and I haven't done anything but look at boxerworld. I am going to go now but SERIOUSLY think about if you want me to help you out in looking at your pup. I will do whatever I can.

Talk to you later. Have a FANTASTIC day

Heather,
Hi, I hope your day is going well. I want to start out by saying that I am just blown away by the fact that you are so willing to help me out and we haven't even known each other but for a few short days. You must be an incredibly special person. Can we be friends? It's funny because I would do the same thing if the tables were turned and I were you because I'm also that type of a person, but I just don't run into too many others like that. So I just really want to thank you for extending yourself in that way. I'm definitely tempted to take you up on your offer, and I may need to, but let me see how Jayde responds to the e-mail I just sent her. I told her that since we were coming down to the last few weeks, I'm feeling very anxious about a few things and one of them is the fact that I'm purchasing this puppy that I haven't seen pictures of yet. And I told her that I'm just feeling vulnerable and frustrated being so far away. I keep envisioning all the other people on the waiting list coming over to see the litter and getting to choose which one they want, and then we are just stuck with whichever one no one else wants. I'm not saying that is what's happening because she did tell me that she chooses each puppy based on what home they are going to, so that sounds like no one gets to just go over and say they want so and so and that's who they get. But I can't help it if my mind starts imagining things. So I'll let you know what happens.

I cry when I watch Wedding Story and Baby Story too. I'm just such a romantic gush at heart, and I get so touched when I see people expressing strong emotions. It's like I can totally feel what they are feeling. Luckily, it comes on when no one is around (except the kids) so I don't feel like as much of a blubbering idiot.

Jayde told me that the boy Boxers are more "sucky" too. Sucky must be a native term because I had never heard it before and she had to explain to me what it meant. Down here when you say something is sucky it means "it sucks" like it's bad. So see I learned something new. And that's kind of what I meant about broadening your perspective when you meet new people from other places. Anyway, I know our male Apollo was definitely a velcro dog and also wanted to be by my side at all times, so from my one experience, I'd have to agree. However, I've never had a female dog of any kind since I was a very little girl so I can't really judge the differences fairly yet. I asked the board several weeks ago if they could tell me the differences they've noticed between male and female boxers and the responses where sort of even both ways. Some said their females were more independent, but then some said they were very loving, affectionate and always at their side. Their final consensus seemed to be that it really depended more on the dog. To be honest with you, when I heard that the females can be more independent, I got a little turned off myself. But then Jayde told me that it would really be best to get a female so that we'd have less chances of the dogs having dominance issues. And I definately don't want to take the chance of our Boxer getting into a tangle with our small dogs and the small dogs losing badly. So I'm just keeping our fingers crossed that Marley will be more on the affectionate, dependent end of the spectrum.

You asked me what was wrong with Apollo, and we ended up losing him at a young age to cancer. He was only three. I attribute it to the fact that we got him from a backyard breeder and he had a compromised immune system from the beginning. When he was about three months old, he came down with chronic colitis. That was awful for him and us. We ended up putting him on a special diet (which was expensive and hard to find) and that helped him tremendously, but then he came down with chronic skin allergies and had to be put on steroids to control them. I really felt so sorry for him that in his short life, he experienced so much discomfort. In a way, when he got the cancer and we had to put him down, it was heartbreaking but a relief at the same time, because he would have suffered with certain ailments for the rest of his life. Because of the emotional rollercoaster we went throught with him, I was really scared to get another boxer and when we did decide we had to have another, we made it a priority to get one from a good breeder. We realized that even though the initial cost of the puppy is more, hopefully you are insuring yourself more against getting a puppy that will be sickly and costing you much more in the long run, both emotionally, and monetarily.

I'm so excited for you that you get to go see the litter tonight (a little envious as well). I could go look at puppies for a hobby I think it is so much fun! Please let me know what happens. So is Lisa going to pick the puppy for you, or is she letting you guys decide? And if you she picks one for you, on what basis will she do it? Like based on your family situation and what you plan of doing with him?

Heather,
Hi. How did everything go last night? I'm dying to know if you picked "the" puppy and what he's like.

I also wanted to let you know that Jayde responded to my e-mail and she is having a photographer come out this weekend to take some professional shots of the puppies, so I should have some good pics by this weekend. But better than that, I sent her a wish list of what we were looking for in our puppy and when she got it, she said she had a puppy in mind who fit our description pretty well. So she took a quick picture with this cheap digital camera that she had just so I could get an idea of what the puppy looks like and sent it to me. The picture isn't a very good one, but you can tell she's really dark brindle and she has white on her chin, chest and feet. She is soo pretty and cute! Then she described her as being the sweetest, most innocent and laid-back in the litter and I told her she sounded like THE ONE! I am so excited!

Let me know what's going on with you guys.

Hope to talk to you soon.

Hello Shannon,

I sent you a private message but I just copied everything out into here so... enjoy

Last night was pretty fun. The puppies have changed so much in the two weeks since I last saw them. There were wired for sound last night. Running everywhere and jumping and playing. I just loved watching them.

It turns out that we are getting the boxer that is in the picture. Lisa based this decision on the fact that he will be smaller than his dad (who is 85 lbs). I think this is because I am so small (5'3" on a good day). He also doesn't have a dominence problem. Mike had him in his arms on his back and he calmed right down so that hopefully means that he will be easier to train than the other.

Mike is a little concerned because Lisa told us that Jackson was a little bit slower developing than the rest. She said for the first couple of weeks he was a few days behind everyone else which is weird because he was the biggest at birth. She said that he has been developing at the same rate as the rest for the last few weeks. I have to admit it concerns me but he isn't the runt of the litter (it is a tie between him and one of the other boys) and he was the one who figured out how to get up the stairs first last night, how to get behind the fence first and how to be a general sh*t disturber. All of the pups had their shots and check ups yesterday and everyone was healthy (no heart murmers or defects were found). I think that Mike was a little bit overwhelmed with 5 pups, Joey and a female boxer that the breeder owns. It was quite crazy.

Lisa now thinks it would be a good idea to take Jackson with us on our holidays but I think we are going to get her to keep him until we come back from Saskatchewan. I am so scared of the possibility of him getting parvo and he can't get his second set of shots until after we come back so as my mum always said better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry, don't mean to ramble on.
I asked Lisa about Jayde and apparently she lives right down the street from Lisa. So if you don't hear anything from Jayde just let me know and we will get you a picture come hell or high water. Have you heard anything back? Have you seen a picture? That is so awful about Apollo. That must have broken your heart. Sometimes for the love of your animal you have to put them down. Okay I really have to work but post back when you have time

Talk to you later.
