Phenylpropanolamine/Proin Question (anyone with a dog on it?):

BooBoo is 40 pounds, and we just had to up her dose of Phenylpropanolamine from 25mg a day to 50mg a day. She's been peeing her bed, we've checked for a UTI, and nothing.

Are there side effects? What doses have worked for your dog?

We give Shorts 25 mgs/dy. We haven't noticed any side effects other then she doesn't leak anymore. Our vet said they used to give it to humans but they don't anymore. I don't know of any side effects in dogs. She has a problem once in a while if she has had a busy day playing with lots of her friends and wears herself out. She often has playdays with friends. I have found that if I make sure to take her out before bed she tends not to have any problems.

We give our Chloe (50 pounds) 25 mg/meal = 50 per day. It sort of works but we are at a loss right now. We have spent hundreds on tests and exploratory surgeries and they find nothing. She seems to drip/leak when returning from walks. Sometimes it is a drip here and there, other times it is much more and lasts longer. I learned from the previous owners that she was badly damaged with her spaying when she was a puppy, but don't know if this is a result from that. We may need to up the dose, I don't know. We need to do something though. It is very strange. The medicine itself does not seem to have side affects that I know of. But if it does start working, you can get a really good price off the web instead of purchasing through the Vet's office....usually.

Phenylpropanolamine is a drug with known side effects - those include loss of appetite, restlessness, irritability, tremors, fast heart rate, high blood pressure and urine retention. There are a few old threads on the forums where dogs taking it have suffered seizures (which may or may not have been caused by the proin).

It is worth doing a search of the forums - there are quite a few threads with others' experiences (good and bad) that may be helpful to you.

Just as a matter of interest, did you ever try natural incontinence cures like parsley? Doesn't work for every dog, but it helps in a great many cases and there are no known side effects to that one

Leila experienced incontinence w/in a month of her spay. This was very disappointing. Of course there doesn't seem to be any reprecussions for the vet's actions...it was obvious that it was a direct result of the spay. "They say" it is usually related to the loss of the female hormone estrogen that some female dogs are more sensitive to this, in fact 1 out of 5 female dogs experiences incontinence related to the spay. "I did check this statement and found it to be support by multiple sources."

She is on 25 mg with each meal = 50 mg per day. This has made a difference, but hasn't completely SOLVED the problem. We feel that it is good enough at this point.

For the record, we tried all the natural remedies and they didn't help any bit. 50 mg is a normal dosage for help alleviate this problem. If the Proin doesn't work, then it is recommended to consider estrogen replacement. Good luck, I hope it gets better for all of us affected with this.
