Thank you so much for everyones reply! I'm going to look into getting my Brandy into some classes within the next two months..she is only three months old now. This will be the first time I've taken a dog to a class so I think it will be fun and interesting!

You will like it.

I think you will really like puppy play time. That was my favorite time watching Sketch make friends and interact. :D

Yes, actually I have heard lots of negative things about petsmart trainers and their classes. I'm sure there are exceptions and that they have some good trainers. Another concern that I have is the small area in which they train the dogs. It is down right tiny!

I'm glad that you had a great trainer!

Can you be a bit more specific, or was your post just a shot in the dark?

Thanks,

M

PetsMart Classes

Rush took puppy courses at Pets Mart and he is going to take click-a-trick courses. He does very well with them. I like taking him to PetsMart because the training is in the store and it gives him A TON of distractions while training including the other dogs (cause we do group)... and it helps Rush to work with distractions later on when there are distractions.

The courses depend on how many people sign up at least at our store. For instance we had to wait after our puppy course for about a month now so that enough people would sign up for the click-a trick course.

Rush made a friend in his puppy class and we talked to them and plan on taking the clicker course together.

I like it because it is a good way to meet other dogs/ dog owners that have the same interest in their own dogs as far as training and what not then we can talk and possibly meet up outside of the classes.

We are however going to look into private trainer as well... just because even though I REALLLY love our trainer and the distractions in the store.. I think there are more qualified trainers out side of PetsMart.

I know our trainer we use there is just a fellow student at our college! I think she does a great job... but I would like to look into other trainers as well.

Thanks

Thanks for the good info. I think I will give the petsmart class a try, can't hurt. What kind of things do they do at the course? My boxer, Hollister, is roughly 4 months old now, he sits, walks on a leash, shakes hands... and comes when you call him (about 70% of the time). Will I benefit from the class or should I look to an advanced one?

Thanks for the further input.

Obedience classes

In the puppy class, they will teach you the typical sit, stay, loose leash walking, etc, and the class provides great interaction with other dogs and people. Although your puppy already does a few things, I would suggest this class to anyone.

I like our wait command...

We were also taught the wait command in puppy class.

It is like stay but you draw an invisible line and the dog is allowed to do anything he wants on the other side of that line... so he can go lay down, sit, just stand there as long as he stays on that side....

It is REALLLY helpful when we are bringing groceries through the front gate of our front yard... and we have him wait so that he does not leave the front yard. That way he can go in or out of the house... but not out of the yard.

It's an extremely helpful command. (we're still working on it alittle, Rush does it probably 60% of the time, depending on how far we walk to the car)

i would look for a trainer who is more established and who will give you more one on one ,personaly i have had negitive exsperance from a petco trainer(my madie ended up at the vet after her class)so i'm alittle leary of pet store trainers alot of them its a part time thing i'd rather go to someone who does it for a living..........

Petsmart training classes

I first took my Isis to a trainer for individual training. I found this to be much more beneficial because he had the time to monitor how I trained her and made me better at it. As for petsmart, I took her there to get her some socialization. Although the trainer was good, it wasn't a great experience because of the limited amount of time spent on each person and thier dog. On top of that, my Isis contracted kenel cough there as well.

Evie did her basic at Petsmart. First, we did a few private classes because she was SO SO SO OMG distracted by everything around her. What a difference it made. Then we did the regular group class. The trainer was wonderful!!! As soon as I can afford it, Adam will go to group class as well.

I think it just really depends on the trainer-- no matter where you go.
