Hi,
We will be getting our pup some time next week. She will be a bit over 12 weeks
I went to speak to the vet that we will be bringing her too and he said its a good idea to get pet insurence when they are young....this way whenever anything happens ...she will be covered.Once thay are older...good luck getting any coverege>
Now this. does not cover tha reg visits but it does cover pretty much everything else...and its about 30 bucs canadian...i guess about 20 us
What do you guys think
My hubbie is telling me....its just a dog ( he has never had a pet...so he has no clue...but i know soon will be in love with our addition)
any thought...i personally think its definately worth it!!
thanks

I've never been a fan of pet insurance, but I'm sure there are some members on here that have nothing but great things to say about it. My mother in law is from Vancouver, Canada and had pet insurance on her Rottweiler. The poor thing fell ill and they wouldn't honor the pet insurance and she was out thousands of dollars. And then to make matters worse, the dog just didn't have it in him to make it. :(
Hopefully some members on here can recommend some good companies. Unfortunately I don't know where my mother in law got her insurance.

I've use "Veterinary Pet Insurance" and they have honored all of my claims. I believe the cost is approximately $20 per month. We've had the insurance for a little over a year and have saved about $600 (after the $240 cost per year).
Please note however that I've heard some stories about various insurance companies not honoring claims.

We got Pet Care - $25 CND; it's $20 for most other breeds - but Boxers are a "select breed"... Just got it; never used it - but same as the one you're looking at - it will not cover vaccines and stuff. It will covr accidents and illnesses; 6 major categories ($50 deductible). Some illnesses have a $2,000/yr limit - so me don't.

I think it's a good idea.

When Chloe was 10 weeks she got sick in the middle of the night; we took her to emergency: it cost almost $300... That would have been covered. I never want to see my puppy throw up and question if that's a one time deal - and wait for the next episode; I want to wrap her up, take her in, and not worry about how much it will cost.

pet care

That is the one that i am looking at...there is the basic package...and the one you mention as well as the super premium one.
I figure the one you got will cover what i might need ( hopefully will not need)
Like i said...my hubby cannot believe i will be paying 30 bucs each month...for ..just incase.....but he has no clue how expencive vets can get.
The pup is not coming till end of next week...when would you recommend i get the insurence.

After what I went through with my beloved Finley I will always have pet insurance. At the end of his life I wracked up a $7000 vet bill, it would have been nice to get anything back. I think of pet insurance as a forced savings now. If you’re good at putting money away for things like this (which I am not) then you may do fine without it.
There have been a lot of threads on this so you can try doing a search to get more information :)
VPI does not cover anything they deem hereditary, so later in life if your dog gets hip dysplasia, for example, they will not cover that.
I have PetCare and recommended them (I have the premium package). They DO cover hereditary illnesses/diseases. The only drawback is you have to pay a $50 deductible anytime you submit a claim but when you’re spending hundreds or thousands, you don’t even notice that. Already I had to use it with Owen, it was a $720 bill and I got $680 back.

If you do decide on getting insurance, get it as soon as the puppy is home... most insurance covers vaccinations and neutering/spaying... so those will be your first reimbursements...

I have Pet's Health Insurance and I think I pay $30 a month per dog. I use it as my peace of mind for the accidents that one hopes to never get into. I've learned to do a lot of research and home treatments before I take mine into the vet's office for minor things now, so it's the accidents and surgeries that I'm paying insurance for.

If I remember correctly, Pet's Health Insurance also does not cover anything hereditary but they do cover routine visits. Also, with Pet’s Health, every year when you have to renew they will not cover any pre-existing condition from that year. So say in year 1 your dog gets a recurring ear problem and needs surgery (just an example), when you renew the next year it will now be considered pre-existing and you will not be covered for that ear problem anymore for the life of the dog.
VPI and PetCare do not have that problem – they just don’t cover a pre-existing condition when you initially join.
PetCare does not have an option for routine vet visits but they do cover anything major, including hereditary problems.
I guess each person has to choose what best suits their needs. For me, I just wanted to make sure I have the major things covered and I feel PetCare is the best for that.
