Peeing when he gets excited?

Brutus is about 23 weeks old now (I think my math is correct-born on Sept.11). He is finally house-trained and hasn't had an accident in quite a while, knock on wood. The problem lately seems to be that when people come over the house he gets very excited. Starts running around, kidney-beaning, jumping up and down. Most recently, this has expanded to peeing. It seems he is so excited that he just pees. Often it winds up on the person's foot. Obviously this is embarassing, for both myself and the offended party, and I want to know if there is anyway to stop this short of putting him in the kennel ahead of time.

Is this something that he is going to grow out of? Any suggestions welcome.

Do a search for 'submissive peeing' ;)

Yes, it's quite common, especially in puppies. The best thing you can do to help him out is to ignore him when he's excited and don't give him any attention (or let your guests give him any attention) until he settles down. Rather than a kennel, you could put him on a leash when you're expecting company, make him sit while *you* greet your guests but don't let any meeting and greeting take place that includes him (preferably your guests shouldn't even acknowledge him) until he is calm. That will not only help with the submissive peeing, but it will help to teach him proper greeting ettiquette - which doesn't include jumping up ;)

Kenzie is 4 and still does this. We took her to the vet after it evolvied to "leaking" while she slept. Basically the vet called it incognance (sp?) and gave me some medicine. The muscles aren't able to stay closed when they are excitesd. We usually have to tell out guests to ignore her and let her calm down first. She doesn't jump on them but the minute they pet her, her butt gets real low to the grown and she squirts! Your pup is still young, and most grow out of it. But if not, be careful and watch her bed to see if its also wet. Good luck!

pups are famous for doing this, getting excited and peeing. Boxer is right about teaching him how to greet in a calm matter, this will help in the long run. You can also greet outside for now, so as not to ruin carpets. He should also grow out ofthis stage, he is just starting to notice others around him, and how excited they are to see him. I went through this with justice and now she knows how to greet everyone.

Well, Chloe is 7 weeks older then your little dude - and she pees too. She had that sort of excitement level form the very begining. I am happy to report that it has curbed to a minimum. We great in a very calm manner - and all visitors are forwarned not to excite the puppy. First they come in, take of their shoes, and after a while they can approach Chloe - all while she's in the sit-stay command. Her bum wil sweep the ground - but she won't pee.

However, there are 2 persons - that make Chloe so excited that she pees as soon as she sees them. They're both women with high pitch voices - so maybe that has something to do with it. They both love Chloe very much - and understand that it's from excitment... If we're visiting, I make sure she goes potty before we approach the house, and if at home, we meet them on the front porch...

She will grow out of it one day.... lovicon

Ohhhhh boy, do we know abou this also. Koda does this, it started in puppy class. He was sooooo excited to see all the other puppies or anyone else for that matter.

I still grab a hand full of paper towels when I go into PetSmart because he still does it when he gets really excited. Especially when he sees his trainer. I've started making him sit first before anyone can pet him and that really seemed to help. It's not as bad as it once was but it still happens when he's really excited.

I am just hoping he'll grow out of it, but sometimes they don't from my understanding. Another time when he pees is when another dog is smelling him, sometimes he'll just pee. That was REALLY bad when he was a few months younger, he hasn't done it the last couple of times so I'm keeping my fingers crossed he's feeling a little more sure of himself.

But I still love him to pieces..... :D

Good Luck!

Excitement pee?

Ok though not exactly on topic here but close enough....deuce is 7 months old....he is doing very well in all aspects...but he did something the other day that really had me thinking , what the heck was that all about?.. he came in from outside and tore butt through the house and ran into my bedroom....jumped on the bed (NO-NO) grabbed my comforter and started going bannanas on it...(NO-NO#2) he then pulled it off the bed and was biting and scratching and doing back flips on it.... all of a sudden he starts PEEING (NO-NO#3) he then looks at me with the OH CRAP I'M PEEING look and tears butt back through the house and sits at the back door...dribbling pee all the way..... do you think this could be excitement pee?

I remember those days very well with Xena. There was only 1 person that she would get so excited to the point of "submissive peeing"! Whenever I knew he was coming over, I had to leash Xena and make her sit during the initial greeting, and although she remained calm, the second he started talking to her, she would pee! He dubed her with the name "Pi$$er"! :p However, she did grow out of it and now she's just plain ole submissive (laying on her back) when she gets excited ! :)
