I have a 3 month old boxer. He has been in a crate since we got him at 6 weeks. He is in his crate for 8-10 hours a day and normally gets breaks at lunch time. He was doing fine in his crate for the first few weeks, but for the last two weeks or so he has been having accidents in his crate. We are still releiving him at lunch time, but it does'nt seem to matter. When he was first put in the crate he never peed at all. There were times that he held it for up to 8 hours. We have cleaned the crate after every accident and have him on a pretty good schedule. He seems to have no problems going outside and will for the most part go to the door and sit down when he needs to go out. Any suggestions?

Does the crate have any bedding in it (blankets, pillows, etc)?? Those items absorb the smell, making your pup think it's ok to potty in there. If you have bedding in there, try taking it out for a while. That worked for clara when I noticed her peeing in there for no reason.
Another thing to consider, perhaps the crate is too big??? Pups don't want to mess where they sleep and don't want to sit in it. Perhaps, the pup's messing in one corner and sitting in another. If the crate is too big, there are crate dividers I believe that can make the crate smaller and the pup will have no where to potty. Hope that helps. Try doing a search! Good luck

I completely understand this problem. When Tanner was a puppy he would mess in his crate too. He eventually grew out of this phase...probably by the time he was 6 months. I think the crate dividers are a great idea too. If money is a concern, I would recommend putting two 24 packs of soda in the crate to take up the extra space. That is if you are fairly certain he won't rip open the boxes of soda. (I wouldn't want him damaging his precious baby teeth and gums)
Secondly, you might want to double check with you vet and make sure he doesn't have a medical problem and perhaps this is the reason he cannot hold if for 8 hours. I think the rule of thumb is that puppies can hold it for every hour that they are months old. Example. a 6month old can hold it for up to 6 hours...give or take.

The only way I could control my dog from not peeing in her crate was to take all the blankets out. Thats the only way.
