Pee without warning!

How can I get Elvis to bark when he needs to go out to the loo ? He is good that he goes to the front door, but if we are not lucky enough to catch him, he will either pee or poop at the bottom of the stairs, and has even been know to pee whilst walking down the stairs to go out.

We have tried barking at him when he gets to the door but he looks at us as though we are mad, does anyone have any ideas as we are constantly following him if he goes out the lounge in case he pees on the carpet!!!

I would have replied sooner, but I was laughing at this visual!

My female has never let us know when she has to go out either. At age 4 however, she's on a pretty predictable potty schedule, so we don't worry about her having accidents.

But for a young lad, may I suggest Bell Training? I have not tried this myself, but I believe it involves hanging a string of bells from the door knob. Before you go outside to potty each time, you make him sit, and take his paw and ring the bells. Praise him like crazy and take him immediately outside to potty. Before long, he should be ringing the bell each time he has to go out to potty.

Someone who has used this method may have a more detailed description

That sounds like a great idea and so simple to, gonna go out and get some bells today, will let you know how i get on.

I have a 14 week pup that is bell trained since week 10 the first 2 weeks I was taking him outside every 15 min. then week 10 I put a bell on a rope (the kind you would find in a cat toy.)on the door knob at nose higth then pointed at it and said "ring the bell" then helped him ring it with his nose then opened door and gave him a treat.After about 5 times helping him do it he started ringing it himself so i would just point at it and say "ring the bell" open door and give a treat. I did this about 20 min then waited a half hour the did it again but this time i had him go outside and pee then come in and get a treat about 2 days after that he was ringing the bell to go outside and do his stuff.Now he rings it all the time even when he dont have to go.But I just open the door when he dont go out he dont get a treat.

My Boxers don't bark; they will scratch at the door if I don't happen to see them standing there. And a puppy doesn't have much ability to hold it; if they head to the door, you have to run and let them out. At least that's a good sign that they get the idea!
