Roxy is doing pretty well with her training! With her peeing on the bed.. try washing it in Vinegar to get rid of all the pee smell. Maybe the smell is being left behind somehow? Sounds like you are doing great though! Good luck!

9 week old pup

We've been very blessed with our pup Tank. He must have a super bladder! lol. He's in his crate 7 hours during the day and he holds it. When I get home I let him out and he runs right to the back door. I open the back door and he's sprinting for the grass and he pee's for roughly 35 seconds! He sleeps on the floor next to my bed at night and no accidents so far. We've had him for little over a week and he's only had 2 accidents. The breeder took him out to potty at 6 weeks of age. Could that have helped?

Certainly, the breeder starting housetraining can have helped :) So from that point of view, you're blessed. BUT: Asking your puppy to hold his bladder for 7 hours in a crate at 9 weeks is risking his health. He should not ever be asked for more than 3 hours, at absolute maximum, at this age. It's not even a matter of whether he "can" hold on - but what damage you may be doing to his internal organs in asking him to (his small body won't have that much resistance to the bacteria and toxins that will be building up, and *should* be excreted every hour or two).

Does he at least have constant access to water during the day?

He just holds it on his own. I wouldn't get upset if he did have an accident. When I get home and take him out, he urinates for what seems like forever.

I give him all the water he can drink in the morning before I go to work. I wasn't sure if I should leave water during the day. He's usually in his crate for 6-7 hours before my wife or I get home to feed him.

Well, no, he doesn't just hold it on his own. He holds it because he isn't getting any water, and doesn't want to spend the day sitting in his own pee. YOU might not care if he has an accident, but HE does. That is the original and main purpose of a crate, after all - to provide a (very powerful) incentive for the puppy to avoid urinating unless he is otherwise going to burst.

Your puppy should have access to fresh water at all times, and should not be crated for periods exceeding 3 hours at his age. It's not inconvenience you're risking, but your pup's health.

Just to chime in it took finding the best cleaner on earth for us (the dog can smell the urine spots) its called OUT! its in a white bottle with a hot pink label on the front. I found it at wal-mart in the pet area. It contains bacteria that get rid of the problem, my dogs cant find the spots after that!!

Ill never forget the days of letting them out what felt like every 20 mins. You just have to be proactive! For mine, if they would even lower their noses to sinff...out we went! Then I did the crazy lady praise and pee pee dance when they finished. (neighbors thought I was nuts). My two are about a year and a half old at this point and they still are not crated all day!! I still run home for lunch to let them out, so 4 hours is what they spend. Yes, they could hold it longer, but why do that? Keep it on their level, would you hold it that long? If you have a young puppy you MUST take them out more often. Just because they "should" be able to hold it or they "can" doesnt mean they should have to. Your training will go much easier if you let them out as often as possible.

No more than 3 hours? I'm sorry, but I do have a job. So, I have no choice but to crate him all day. I wake up at 6 (he sleeps on the floor at night) and let him out to do his business. He comes back in (about 6:15 am) I feed him and give him water. At around 7 am, I give him more water. 7:20-7:30 he goes back out to do his business again. 8 am, more water. I take him out at 8:40 again, before I leave for the day. My wife gets home at 3. He seems to be doing just fine. He has to pee when my wife or I get home.

That is still waaay too long to be left without water or a potty break.

You have every choice - just like everyone else with jobs (which is most). If you cannot come home to feed/exercise/potty your puppy at reasonable intervals do not crate him.

If you crate him, he is forced to either sit in his own waste all day, OR to hold his bladder for unhealthy periods. That is NOT how a crate (which is primarily a housetraining tool) is intended to be used. Excess crating is abusive. You try eating a dry breakfast, taking in no fluids all day, and denying yourself the opportunity to relieve yourself all day - just for a week - and perhaps you'll get an idea of how unreasonable it actually is (then multiply it by 10 since you're dealing with an infant).

Alternative options aren't that hard to find though. OK - so you can't come home during the day. Plenty of people can't. Some are able to get a friend/family member/neighbour or hired dog walker to come and let the pup out at regular intervals - for a short play and opportunity to relieve himself. Others take the option of gating the puppy in the kitchen or some other hard-floored room with newspaper to relieve himself on. Both are perfectly reasonable options that don't risk the dog's health (and don't force him to sit in discomfort all day - which even aside from the health impact, just isn't very nice).

It isn't even forever - the rule of thumb for crating is that the maximum time a pup should ever be crated is his age in months + 1 to a maximum of 8 hours for adults. Your guy (9 weeks) is pretty much exactly 2 months old - therefore, the maximum amount of time it is safe/reasonable to leave him without the opportunity to potty is 3 hours. When he's another month old, it will be 4 hours. And so on. By the time he's 6 months old, he should be able to be safely left crated (if that's what you wish) for the 6-7 hours you need to be gone.

I have him in an adult sized crate. He could pee in the back of this thing and have plenty of room to walk around without going near it. I can start leaving water in his crate for him to drink. That's no problem. But, he's still drinking as much water as any other dog a day. He drinks close to 3 large bowls in the morning.

I guess I just don't understand how he would be dying of thirst. I'll take your advice and leave water during the day. But, I disagree about the crate. His crate was originally for an adult Rottweiler. But, we decided on a Boxer. The crate came with a divider, but I didn't use it. So, he has the entire crate to work with. So, he can do his business in this crate and have plenty of room to walk around and not come near it.
