Pee on the Floor!!!

OK, so I first got Bevo when he was only 6 weeks old, which I now know was too young. It only took him 2 weeks and he was potty trained because I built a doggy-door into my back patio. But all of a sudden he has started to pee on the floor... right in front of me!!! Im not sure why. I rubbed his nose in it after the second time and feel bad now. I usually crate him during the day when I am at work and he has grown too big for the door(great timing). I dont want to have him caged at night and during the day.....what to do?
(Oh yea he is 4 mos old now).

Don't give up... He's still a baby. /Rubbing his nose in it, does no good. Dogs live in the here and now. If he did it five minutes ago, he wouldn't know it. It's an act of nature. know when Drake was 12 weeks, we took him to puppy kindergarden and he learned "potty outside". Basically it's this. When you take your puppy outside to go potty, say the same "mantra" over and over again, "potty outside, potty outside" over and over til they start to go. As soon as they "assume the position", you instantly be quiet and do not distract them. Make sure they are completely finished and ready to come in. Then give them a treat OUTSIDE. (always remember to bring something in your pocket) Lavish praise and the treat outside only. If you bring them back inside and give them the treat, they don't keep the connection to going potty outside. It took about a week for Drake to learn the drill. Good luck and you might want stay outside with him a bit longer to make sure she is finished

4 months is still very young to be house trained, it takes a long time for them to get the message that they need to go to toilet outside. I would NEVER rub a puppys nose in his mess, even if you catch him in the act, he will only associate you with unpleasant experiences.

Guico and Louise that is fantastic advice. Standard routine...open up the back door every morning first thing, before i take care of myself, hehe. Then spend time especially if it's a pup. When Josie was a pup i always sat on the deck and said go potty, then she would, then go poop, and she would, but not look at her at all, thats private. Didnt take her too long to figure it out. Never rub nose or scold. All they want is your attention, especially if they are doing good.

As the previous thread mentioned...thats a young pup. You will love eachother for a long time.

What exactly are you trying to achieve by rubbing a dog's nose in it? He's somehow supposed to understand from that that you have a problem with the location of his pee? Sorry, but he'll never make a mental leap like that one - how could he possibly? The only possible things he could learn would be (a) you're unpredictable and do disgusting/nasty things to him; and (b) pottying in your presence is very risky (so he'll just hide and do it when you're not around). Not exactly what you want to achieve, I think

If the dog is suddenly urinating indiscriminately, especially right in front of you like that, then the most likely explanation is that he has a urinary tract or bladder infection and cannot hold on. Those are classic symptoms. Take the dog to a vet and get his health seen to before you do anything else.

And if that is not the problem, then it's just better potty training that is required - not punishment. No puppy fully understands housetraining until around the 6-7 month mark. He may have given a good impression of understanding early, but it is extremely unlikely that he actually did. Up until around 7 months, successful housetraining is 110% dependant on YOU and your good management. If you try to rely on the pup's limited understanding, you'll just end with puddles.

Potty training is an on going thing that can last months.
Most of the time now Zeb will go to the back door and paw it, we let him out and say wee wee. I want that as his assosiation word for both so use it for wee or #2's.
He hasn't done a thing in his crate over night for a week now but I'm sure he will have the odd accident, he's only young. He does the occasional wee on the floor (luckily it's all tiled downstairs or wood) and when he does I pick him up and take him outside even though he's done it, to try & reinforce that outside is where he is supposed to go.

Thanks for the help!!! ... I will let him out every hour now when Im home. And no more harsh punishment, I will priase him when he does good and "bad dog" is about the worst he will get.

Enough Scolding

I read that they have all told you not to rub nose in urine. Here is the best explanation as to why. When you rub a dogs nose in the pee he relates that, with you are upset with the mess. He/she does not understand or comprehend that you are upset that they made the mess. That is why dogs often get a look of shame after pottying in the house. Positive reinforcement is the absolute best for any training for your puppy!
