Paw Pad injuries...

Have any of you dealt with a sliced paw pad?

It seems as if my Austin has cut his paw pad pretty deeply. I noticed him tracking blood on the cement in the backyard. I don't know what he cut it on. It's a slice, but from pressure on it has spread open and you can see the fleshy part of the pad. He's more uncomfortable with the wound dressing, than the actual wound. He isn't limping nor seems in pain.

I've bandaged it after cleaning it and putting neosporin on it. Wrapped it in a gauze pad so it can breath, but he keeps biting at it. I have a vet appointment tomorrow morning for Avari (the youngest one for a check-up on her vomiting), I'm bringing him in as well to make sure he's okay and see if he needs stitches.

I saw the sticky on injuries, very helpful, but didn't see anything on the actual pawpad...

I highly doubt that your vet will put stitches in a cut pad. More likely they will use medical glue, which isn't all the different from your household super (or krazy) glue.

Atlas cut his pad last year. It was really deep. It took forever for it to heal but it finally did. I just kept it cleaned and put neosporin on it. You could try super glue. My DH's fingers split really bad in the winter and he keeps super glue on them.

Hey austin, yeah, have the same situation with a cut paw pad, my dog is more bothered by the dressing than the actual cut itself........just wondering if a trip to the vet is necessary

Vet says, "Let it heal on its own...BUT..."

So this morning I took Austin and Avari to the vet. Avari got her distemper/parvo shot and had a good bill of health after her scare last week with all the vomitting. she must've naturally got whatever it was out of her system, and has her appetite and energy level back! No more throwing up!

Austin on the other hand had a pretty bad slice on his paw. The vet said, because it looks like it's already in the healing process, that we can just continue to bandage it up with neosporing and allow 1 week or so for it to heal without any heavy running, playing, etc. He put some different ointment and re-wrapped his foot with more padding and said to leave on for 2-3 days before I change it.

He was thinking that if it didn't heal that he might have to take him in and do surgery to remove away some of the tissues and sew it up, but said that in order to save me money and that since the wound was healing well on its own, that I may not need to do it and to check in with him at the end of the week to see if its okay. The vet also said that if it starts to look swollen, red, or get that puss look to it, than I should definitely take him in...

I'm hoping that it's going to heal on its own!

I would take it in since you never know if it's something that might already be infected, or might need professional treatment. My mom is a nurse and was able to clean his wound, and bandage it- the vet congratulated us on some good wrapping- I think it helped too since the would didn't look infected or too red. I might just take a picture of it and post it up...we'll see.

I hope yours heals and there's nothing serious with it. IT's just so hard to tell your little one not to play and stay off his/her feet!?!?

not much the vet can really do. I would keep an eye on it and keep it clean and dry. Kona ripped her pad to the pink and it took a few weeks for it to dry out and re-callouse. If it looks like it is swelling than take it in. You can try to put some liquid bandage on it to seal the cut.

thank you so much for the replies, it is not swollen at all, she just licks at it once in a while to get the tape off, will remove dressing tonight and see what it looks like, and will definately refrain her from jumping around and running on it, will let it dry out during the night and check first thing in the morning, if it is drying out will leave it, or will re dress and take her to the vet tommorrow....thanks again all.......
