Last night Duke got 1/4 to 1/2 of one of his pads (the one that is higher up--not on the bottom of his foot) shaved completely off. Didn't realize anything was wrong until I got up early this morning and found blood on the floor and on one of our beds. I went to bed last night before my hubby and the dogs. Will something like this scab up and heal on it's own or should I call our vet and see if anything needs to be done? I tried putting some peroxide on it, but he isn't very good about getting his front feet messed with. Paula

Ouch! How did he manage that?

I would think it will probably scab over and heal up mostly on it's own, so unless it is bleeding uncontrollably, I'm not sure that there's much a vet can do for him. Cleaning it and putting some antiseptic powder on it is probably a good idea as that will help to keep infection out and also to dry it up some.

He was out in our backyard tearing around with our other boxer (they can really go too) and hubby noticed he was limping when he came in the house. We do have some obstacles out in our yard like a cement walkway that is raised a little bit and a wooden swing set and a couple of decks so I am assuming he hit or scraped it on something. Hubby isn't too good about checking them over if something is noticeable like I am so he just went to bed. I sure hope it heals on its own, I will do my best to wipe it with peroxide and maybe even some antibiotic ointment. Paula

It should heal on its own. This happened to my rottie. It looked so painful and I have no idea how he did it. It actually healed up quite quickly!

You might want to ask your vet about using peroxide on the wound. My vet had told me that peroxide will make the wound take longer to heal. I was told that just soap and water was best and then an antibiotic cream on the wound.

I used to take Koko out when she was younger - before dog parks existed in our area to run in the fenced in Tennis courts in our area. Occasionallly she would scrape the upper pad on her "heal" and draw blood. Never could figure out how she did it because it never looks like she walks or runs on on it.

I always would clean it and put some antibiotic ointment on it and bandage it until it stopped bleeding. It always healed up fine.
