Talk about a terrifying thought. My skin crawled when I read this thread. I am SO GLAD that there isn't one in my house. I can't imagine the horror of something that terrible.

That would be a terrible injury but I had a dog as a kid that suffered a similar one.
I had a sort of a beagle mix (a hound of some variety) that roamed all over our rural TN. area. He suddenly stopped eating and drinking and would stand over his food bowl and whine and paw at it but would'nt let himself be fed or even examined. When we finally managed to hold him down and pry his mouth open, we found that his tongue was a terrible black mess. The vet said that he had bitten his own tongue so severely that he had severed all the blood vessels and it was literally rotting away. He guessed that he probably got in a fight and bit it accidentally and said that this would be the result within just a few days.
They amputated his tongue right where it joined the bottom of his mouth and fed him IV for a few days and he survived with amazingly few complications. He ate and drank by sticking his whole face in the food or water and drooled pretty badly since he had no way of licking to clean and we would chase him down with a towel to wipe his mouth after each meal. His voice also changed to the most unholy yoowping howl you've ever heard, but he lived another 10 yrs. as happy as any mutt could ever want to be.
