You can also check with your regular vet for a recommendation for after hours emergency care. The emergency vet closest to me works in cooperation with other vets in the area. I had to take Dallas one evening. They called my regular vet in the morning to update them, and by mid-morning, my regular vet had called me to check up on Dallas and see if I needed anything else. Very convenient. I also keep the number posted and as soon as I got Dallas, I located the nearest emergency vet. Sadly, I'm not 100% sure where the nearest human emergency room is. (You can see where my priorities lie!)

Oh my goodness. I would have never thought of a paper shredder being of danger. I am glad she is well and that everything turned out okay!

I had never even contemplated that happening, thank goodness it all turned out well for Phoebe, that was some accident.

What a horrible experiance all of you had to go through. I'm so glade she is doing great. She sounds like a pretty tough girl. Thank you for bringing to our attention the dangers of a paper shredder to our pets. We all know how boxers are with there big tongues, always licking things :D

Makes me think I'm a bad owner. As much as I obsess over Sierra, I don't have the number or even know where an emergency vet/hospital is.

You see news stories from time to time about emergency crews responding to pet emergencies. Maybe if you had tried calling the non-emergency number for your fire department or rescue squad you might have got a response more positive than that from 911?

Thanks for the warning. I'm thinking twice about buying a shredder now.

Actually, 911 gave us the number to the Emergency Vet. And, 911 did dispatch the fire department to respond. After the dispatch was requested the call got cancelled and they were sending Animal Control, but Animal Control never showed either. The whole situation was very stressful, not just the part that my baby was dying, but the fact that I was always taught ever since I was little, that in an EMERGENCY call 911 and they will HELP! A few days after the incident I started making calls to find out why no one would help us. I spoke to the Captain of the Fire Dept. and he hadn't even heard of the situaiton. He was furious, and got back to me right away. He apologized immensely, and told me that the call should NEVER have been cancelled, that the Fire Dept. should have been there to assist us even if they couldn't do anything. He also said that the lieutenant who canceled the call would be punished appropriately. He wouldn't say who she was or why she did what she did. I just can't believe a woman would cancel a call to help a puppy.

Thanks for telling us--it is really shocking--we too have the paper shredder on the floor------------Today it goes up on the counter.

I just wanted to add: A friend of ours has a english pointer i think...anyway somehow he got his ear stuck in the paper shredder. They couldn't get the ear out of the shredder so the emergency vet came to their house to remove and stitch the ear. (i dont know if vets do this all over the country, but this is nebraska!) Just another reason to keep your shredders off... or off the floor!


AND, another advantage of cropped ears...hehe
