Every time I leave Lucky :) out for an extended period of time, she ALWAYS ends up chewing the phone book and newspapers. She does this even though she has ALOT of toys, rawhides and two other dogs to play with. Additionally she plays outside all of the time. I just don't know how to deter her from doing this. I am open to any suggestions.

Move the newspapers and paper items to a higher location.:D In my house we have a saying "move it or loose it".

   Move it or lose it. Love it!!! How true it is. I've been soooo lucky that Luke isn't a "chewer", in the sense that he goes for our things. But I also don't set him up to fail, I always keep in mind that the day will come when he'll decide the tv remote looks quite tasty.

How funny...I thought Rock was the only one out there with a paper fetish...I can't tell you how many magazines and paperbacks I've lost to him. He doesn't eat them...just decorates the house.

I agree completely!! Put them away! Stick 'em in a drawer or put them in a cupboard. No sense tempting her.

Hey Dan...what do you do when the dog knows he's supposed to let that stuff alone until he's bored because you aren't home? Is there any kind of behavior modification technique for that?

Rock used to eat paper products right in front of me but learned real quick he wasn't allowed. He's pretty smart in that way. But guaranteed if I leave home for work and let a book sit somewhere...it's his IF he gets bored.

Also...here's a semi-related question...he has seemed to switch from paper to laundry. If I leave during the day light hours I can be sure to come home to my work shirt in the living room, my pants, anything. It seems to be always something I've worn though and he spends his time digging through the pockets.

I've lost umpteen chapsticks and packages of gum to the laundry monster.

Quincey loves paper but only goes after it when he's bored and its available (we haven't put it up high enough that he can't reach it ;) ) but there is one thing he actually goes searching for - Bounce sheets ! ! ! New, used - it doesn't matter. I think he likes to suck on them and then shread them. What a goofy dog. I would have to agree with the "move it or lose it" advice though :)
