Hi, my puppy is 4 months old now. I know she really wont get this potty training fully down for a long time, but I am confused and need some advice. She is totally crated trained. She will not pee or poop in her crate. She will go outside first thing in the morning after being in her crate but through the rest of the day it is hit or miss with her. I take her out often and wait a while each time for her to go. I no sooner bring her in and she will go on the floor. My question is, should I start from scratch again? If she does not go should I put her in her crate and wait 5 or 10 min. and repeat this, or try something different? I have tryed the bell and treats. I have to say she only associated the bell with playing outside!! Can anyone give some advice? thanks

Yes, start from scratch. Take her out on lead and do not have fun :) What I mean is keep her on lead , walk in circles at her spot, and wait for her to go . Once she goes act like she is the BEST dog in the world ever and then play. Sometimes they "forget to go" and need help so business first and play after. Good luck!

Yup I agree with Elubas. We had that problem with Millie about a month ago (she is 4 months now). She has probably learned to delay her business b/c the longer she does that, the longer she gets to stay outside. So you'll need to reverse that logic for her-it's potty first, then play. To get it started though, if you're outside with her for awhile and no luck she goes straight back to the crate. This is not a punishment, but she needs to know that she can't go in the house and if crating is the only way to guarantee it-so be it. Take her out again in 10 minutes. If she goes...praise praise praise and play. If not, back to the crate. She should catch on quickly. Same thing with the bell abuse-if she rings to go out and doesn't potty, it's back to the crate. It's not like you're crating her all day though. Just 5-10 minutes for her to get the point then let her try again.

Also while housebreaking I think there needs to be a difference that the dog can really understand between play and potty time. For us, it's the leash. Leash always equals potty/walking nicely, and we never let her play on the leash. If she is off the leash it is play time. If you just let her outside off leash and expect her to go potty, she wont. It's more fun to play, and that's why she's pottying in the house when she gets in-she was basically holding it while playing and forgot about it. Good luck!! She will get it :)

This sounds exactly like Gracie. We are in the same situation especally if our other dog goes outside with her. She will hold it until Libby goes back in or when she goes back in. One other thing about Gracie is she hates to get her feet wet, like during or after the rain so I understand what you are talking about.

We are currently trying to bell train Gracie because our front door lies behind the sofa and we can't see her go to the door to be let out.

The thing I found to work for potty training my boxer, 9 month old female, is to use a WEE WEE scent outside where you want them to go. Inside, if the spot they go potty at is a normal spot and they always go there, use pepper spray on it. They will get that scent and not want anything to do with it. Also it won't hurt them to smell the pepper spray. Granted it will smell bad for you too, but after a couple times of smelling it they will get the point and get the outside WEE WEE scent and know that is where they should go. Just my 2 cents worth.
