It sounds like you need to monitor them while they're outside so that they don't have the opportunity to dig. If you catch them doing it, you can correct it. It's going to take some time on your part. I would say that as soon as you see them digging, correct them with a "no digging" type command and give them an alternative like a toy or something. If they continue, take them inside. They will quickly learn that if they dig, they can't play outside.

I hope this helps. We don't have a problem with digging, but it worked really well with teaching Chula to leave the plants alone. Be prepared though, if they've been doing it awhile, it's going to take some time. You'll have to stick with it because if you let them do it sometimes, they'll be confused.

I suggest two things for chronic diggers: 1) put the dog's poop in the hole and cover it up. He won't be digging there anymore.

Second, build a "digging pit" for the dogs and every time they want to dig, direct them to the proper place for digging, out of the yard and flowerbeds, etc. Fill it with loose soil, some untreated chips and sand mix, bury some of his toys and bones slightly and show him how to dig in the pit. Then make sure every time he's outside, you supervise for a while and make sure he is properly redirect to his new "digging pit" when he feels the urge.

Good luck.

I feel your pain, I almost broke my ankle the other day on one of Aspen's "pits of glory". We try to teach her but the whole purpose of the yard is for them to exercise and play, I can't stay out there with them all of the time, hubby is none too pleased, we are constantly buying fill dirt and sod to correct the damage. We are moving in a couple of weeks, I am thinking of buying her one of those plasic sand boxes for children since the home we will be living in for a year is rented. I'll let you know if it curbs her enthusiasm!!!
