On Nov. 27th, 2000 we had to put one of our Boxers to sleep for an illness that was not diagnosed soon enough. Now we might be facing the same sitation with our new puppy who is 6 months old today.
I had taken her into the vet this past thurs. so they could do an upper GI study on her to find out why she throws up about 1/4 of her food after she eats it, and before it has time to digest. We were not to worried and thought that they were going to tell me that there was nothing wrong with her.
When I got the phone call it was a very hard one.
The vet said that when they were doing the study that Ellie had peed twice and so they checked her urine and found that her glucose was way up to 278 and normal is in the 100 range. So she is a diabetic and being a puppy trying to keep it where it needs to be is going to be a huge challenge. I said we can do the best we can possibly do, then he goes on.
He said that during the UGI that they took several xrays and found that her stomach was not emptying properly, after three hours the barium was still there and there was NONE in the small intestine. He said the name of what this is called but I can't remember, so then he proceeds to tell me because of the stomach not emptying properly and her glucose being so high that he wanted to do more bloodwork to see if her pancrease was injured at all. Those tests came back fine but he said that there was something that wasn't fine. I then asked what her prognosis was and he said NOT GOOD!!! He said that we should take her to Kanses state vet school for more tests.
I then called the breeder we got her from to make her aware of the situation and while we talked she informed me that the pup she had kept out of the litter was showing the exact same signs as Ellie, so she was going to call all the ohter people to have them get their pup checked and she was going to call her vet that night and she would call me before we leave on monday to go to Kansas.
Well then on Friday I called the vet who did her ears (our vet doesn't crop ears) and filled them in on the situation and asked if they would be willing to give us a second opinon they said YES to have here there by 8:15 AM Sat. I said ok. Anyhow we went there today and this vet was extremely worried he looked at all the xrays that were taken thursday read teh blood and urine report and he agreed with them and also is very concerend because according to the xrays some of the barrium was in her lungs. He is thinking that MAYBE her esophogus is torn, this man had tears in his eyes when he was talking to me about all of this.
NOw here is the thing, for as sick as she is this pup plays all the time, shows no sign of being sick other then throwing up, we are still in total shock over this and the last thing I want to do is have to put her to sleep and we are praying that everyone is over reacting and she is fine.
