Our new boy?

Today my DH and I took our maltese for his annual vaccinations/check up and something amazing happened. I signed our dog in and sat down with my DH in front of the waiting room's bulletin board. My DH jokingly says, "don't look at the board" just as I look and see 3 fliers from the same family. They were giving away 2 boxers and a cat to "good homes" due to a growing family. One boxer was a 3 yr. old female and the other an 8 month old male, who they listed as quite a STUD.:( They had pictures and of course were adorable. My husband and I have discussed rescuing a male before, we already have a female. Well, I used the cell phone to call the number on the flier and arranged to go and see the male. They told me on the phone that they had put the puppy outside when he was about 4 months old because they didn't want him to knock their young daughter down.
Well, we got there to see this sweet boy with fly bites on his ears, panting, tied on the back patio and in one second I was in love. So after getting as much info as we could about Henry, we brought the little lovebug home. We introduced him to our 3 other dogs outside, individually, and things went smooth. We brought Henry inside and gave him a nice bath. For the next 10 hours it has been non stop boxer wrestling in our house.... I am soooo happy!
My only concerns, so far, are that Henry is very rough with my 2 smaller dogs. They don't know what to think about Henry and are quick to snap at him. I am going to give it some time and pray that everyone adjusts, because we adore him already. If things do not work out, I will contact a boxer rescue group about Henry so that way his chances for a happy future will be better than him being given away the way I found him.

Way to go!!! Lucky Henry!!! I bet he has just never learned not to play so rough and will figure it out in no time. So glad he has found a home for now where he can stay inside and be clean and happy. Hopefully all works out for you guys...keep us posted!

PS. You have already done so much for the boxer world today, but is there any way you can get the girl into rescue? Or have they found a home for her???

Amy and George,
Congratulations on getting Henry!! He is one lucky boy to have adopted you! Beau had been tied up outside before he was rescued, and had fly bites (infected) on his ears! His were so bad, the hair probably won't ever grow back on the top of his ears. But that just gives him character!

I hope all goes well, and please post some photos when you can!

How lucky for Hary that you came along!!!
I think they will be fine once they get used to eachother. Cisco was pretty rough with my cat when we first got him. I have a Pomeranian and the cat was used to only her. So Cisco and those boxing paws were a shock! But Cisco has calmed down now that he has settled in and they get along great.

Thank you to everyone for the encouragement I am happy to report great improvement with everyone getting along. My smaller dogs have been much more comfortable today, 75% of the time, so hopefully it will only get better from here. It is strange, but I think Sidda, our boxer, thinks she is a moderator between the other dogs. If Henry and the little maltese start growling or barking at each other, Sidda will step in between looking very stern as if to say, "Alright you two, that is enough." It is such a joy to watch them all interact.

Now potty training is a different story. I have never tried to train an older puppy that was living outside. Yesterday he did fine, only one small accident. Today....well, let's just say I am out of paper towels.... I know that it will just take time and patience and consistency and more patience.
Any tips, advice, or heads ups would be great...

PS...I have been taking lots of pics with a regular camera so as soon as I get film developed I will put pics of Henry in my gallery. He is a gorgeous darker brindle with natural ears and docked tail.

Congratulations!

Wow...what a handful you have now! I am so glad you were able to rescue this boxer baby from his life with his former owners. He sounds like a great guy! Good luck!

As far as potty training goes, perseverence! Take him out every 20 minutes just like a little pup and praise him when he does it correctly!

The family mentioned that they decided to keep their female boxer. I felt so horrible that she would be left outside, but I am glad to have gotten one of them out of there. This family didn't seem like they were trying to be cruel, they just unfortunately had the "dog is a dog mentality".


Well, we made the trip for more paper towels and treats. I am taking Henry out every 20-30 minutes and we haven't had any accidents this evening (knock on wood). They have all been playing and having a good time. We got Henry his own crate today. He isn't too impressed, but I think it will grow on him I am going to take Henry to the vet in the morning so they can call for his shot record and also check him for worms and look at his ears. I think he is on the skinny side. Hopefully all will check out well and we can get his neuter scheduled.
This little boy is so sweet. He has already become our shadow. He has a ton of energy and bounces around like a deer. And then he is ready to crawl up in our laps and snuggle like he has been here his whole life. Can you tell I am in love?
One more thing and I am done, , I keep calling Henry little, but he isn't so little. Sidda is almost 2 years old and weighs 65 lbs. Henry is 9 months old and is slightly taller than Sidda, but I'd guess him to be 40 lbs. Makes me wonder how big he is going to be...

I'm glad Henry found a great home! And I'm sure the little ones will put him in his place soon. It took a couple of days of my MinPins growling and snaping at Simba for him to get the hint that he played too rough. Now they are the best of friends. As for housebreaking good luck and just stick with it. He'll pick it up.

How wonderful for you and Henry. I hope things continue to go well for you and all the dogs. Maybe someone else in your area may be interested in the female. Pass the word. They may give her away anyway.
