update on our puppy

Thank you so much for all the well wishes. Our Gunnar is still on IV. They tried feeding him this morning and he vomited... of course it was the canned stuff with tons of not so great ingredients. He was so excited to eat he may have eaten too quickly (at least we're hoping that's why) but the internal specialist is concerned with the "gas activity" in his digestive tract. They are examining him again to see if we need further testing to rule out obstruction. They are letting me bring him some oatmeal and cottage cheese and if they allow him to try eating at 2 pm today that's what they'll give him (in smaller portions this time). Never thought I'd find myself here so soon with a 10 week old puppy (you try to do the right things: tested sire & dam, reputable breeder, quality diet, good veterinary care). I guess you just never know and hopefully this is just something we'll work through together.

Our baby is at the emergency clinic again...

Gunnar was released to us on Tuesday, but without answers or even a strong clue as to what made him so sick in the first place. He looked worse when I picked him from the hospital than when I took him there.... so thin, frail and tired. He was very tired the first day back, mostly slept but happily ate the boiled meat and oatmeal in small meals throughout the day. By Wednesday and Thursday he seemed to be improving, he couldn't wait to eat and was playing. But Friday, the watery BM's were explosive (they'd been watery since I picked him up) and he wouldn't eat, only water. I refused to go back to the original emergency clinic (problems with communication, they sent him home in a very poor condition and they gave him ACE ... another story I don't have the energy to deal with right now). This new place seems to be a huge improvement, lots of heart and many boxer owners on the staff.

They are trying to rule out ulcerative colitis, IBD, portosystemic shunt or something more vague (viral, bacterial, parasitic). We're looking at many more tests for our Gunnar (abdominal ultrasound, colonoscopy & biopsy, and upper & lower GI. Right now he's on sulfasalazine and tylosin and is being dewormed again. I'm off to see him shortly and we'll see what the update is today....

Please keep my Gunnar in your prayers... thank you so much for being so supportive and kind.
