Our boxer baby has ringworm

Hello,

We have a boxer boy who will be a year old next week who has ringworm, any suggestions on an oral medication? My vet said that what is on the market is not safe, can hurt the liver.

Ringworm is so hard to clear up with just topical ointments since most of the time we can't tell where the spot is. He looks wonderful and people have even commented on his coat and ask what we feed him because he looks so healthy.

Usually your vet will approve the use of an over the counter anti-fungal creme on the lesions (miconazole). It does takes time to clear up and the patches could take a couple of months to grow back to normal. However, ringworm is very contagious not just to other pets but also to humans. You need to be very careful especially if your boy is ever around children.

Ringworm

Thanks for the replies, we have been very fortunate that he is the only one who has the ringworm. We have another dog and I have 2 children. We have washed him, all the toys, carpet, etc... so that may have prevented us from getting it thus far.

I have read up on it and the only thing I can see is that instead of quitting the baths or ointments 8 wks after not seeing any indication is to continue maybe for 9 or 10.

We were lined up to get a boxer puppy from a friend and had to back out because after being clear for 2 months it came back. It's hard to keep applying ointments since you can not tell where it is. Guess I will have to put it on his whole body in order to make sure it's going where it needs to. Guess I better have the vet order me a case of the stuff in order to do that for a 3 (or more) month time frame.

Once I figure out how to reduce the size of the photos I have I will post the little darlin'

You are lucky that your other dogs and child haven't been affected by the ringworm. I imagine they determined it was ringworm based on a culture, right? I did read somewhere that there could be an immune issue involved in ringworm flareups which might explain why he's the only one dealing with the ringworm.

Also, if you're considering a homeopathic way to deal with ringworm, you may look into Bathing with Neem Soap or Neem Shampoo and rubbing Neem Oil onto the skin. Supplements like Echinacea to boost the immune system; a well-balanced dog food diet, high in protein, fresh fruits and vegetable; fish oil and evening primrose oil.

Both of my boxers had ringworm as puppies, everytime the vet gave us some ointment to put on the spot. it does take awhile to clear up but if you treat it right it should be ok. Is this the first time your baby's gotten it? Definitely wash your hands after touching your pup, I have a friend that contracted ringworm from her dog.

Slim Shady ringworm baby

Wow, I am so glad I joined up. Yes, Shady is the only one who has the ringworm, both kids who are 11 and 12 and the beagle mix (only beagle I know that can box) is 1 1/2. I think that has been some of the reason is the age in the other dog and the kids. The younger the more sustible (I've read). The poor pooch has been bathed so much he won't even go around the bathroom doors. He used to bang his chest into the door to get to us if we were in the bathroom. NOT NOW! Bless his heart. We will defeat it, but want a pain. I have read that low doses of oral medication can be used so I am going to contact my vet and see what he says. Don't want to hurt the dog but do want to kill the ringworm. It's been on and off since Oct 2004. That's why he hates the bathroom, before I was putting on the shampoo as directed by the vet on the spots but Shady would lick it off and then get sick. So now I bathe him every other day and now he is getting older he doesn't lick the shampoo or ointment. It's a long haul. I have never had a dog let alone a puppy that has had ringworm.

Just thankful he looks healthy and we haven't had it. I tried to post pics but can't get them small enough. Will have my 12 yr old daughter help me (sad).

one way I have found that works GREAT for getting ringworm killed w/one dose is to take betadine and a Q-tip and put it right on the spot. Leave it there for 30-45 minutes and then wash off with a warm, soapy cloth (I use specific washclothes ONLY on the critters here so they can be bleached afterwards).

I don't know if your local pharmacy would have it, but I get my betadine at the farm supply store or the farmer's co-op.

Slim Shady finally gets the NEGATIVE on ringworm from vet. I have never dealt with something so stubborn but have learned a lot about it now. Shew, glad it is over!

My advice for anyone dealing with it is to shampoo the dog as often as your able with the medicated shampoo from your vet and when you are not able to bathe them put the shampoo on the spot and bathe them the next day. That is what I finally had to do. Beware though because bathing to much of course can lead to dry skin, hair loss and other issues. It worked for me though and I had tried everything else.
