You are right to fear a shelter, they would not risk placing him either. Maybe a rescue would consult with you on the best way to find a no child home.

im sorry this happened to your son and im glad he is okay. maybe you can talk to your vet about what happened and he can place or try to find a couple with no children who would take him. good luck and if possible have your son try to be around other dogs again so he hopefully will not develop a fear of them in the future.

How very tragic!! Your poor son...I hope in time he will heal on the inside as well.
I agree that a rescue would be your best option. I'm also wondering about the "tremors" you mentioned?? In no way do I try to justify what Zeus did, but could these tremors have something to do with it? Also, is Zeus neutered? I know from experience how intact male dogs are with small children. Since they are at the same eye-level, the dog can swing into alpha mode real quick.
(((HUGS))) to you and your son. This has got to be so heartbreaking for you. Please keep us posted.

Louise's mom- yep, my parents have 3 dogs and we've always had dogs, many different breeds and sizes too- Zeusy was still trying to lunge as she pulled him off :(

Zeus was cryptorchid and also no papers so yes to neutering- at 6 months. His tremors were head tremors but actually more of seizures b/c his entire body would freeze and he would drool. They were cyclical for a while (as in most reoccuring every 6th week or so) and we did have him on anti-seizure medication, but as he got older the vet has had us wean him off and he hasn't had anything like it happen in nearly 6 months. Oh and as far as personality he's far from alpha he's actually very submissive to any other dogs he's been around so I'm just at such a loss as to why this happened.

Our son is doing better- he's still shaken and saying things like "bad dog pain" and barking but I really hope he's not terrified of dogs after this. He's really swollen esp around one eye and has a toothmark bruise right on the bone on the corner of his eye- that one scares me b/c it means his eye was missed by less than a cm But thank God b/c it could have been much worse.

My husband and I have decided to try and find a home for him with adults only and if that doesn't pan out by the weekend then we will contact boxer rescue and the vet also to see what can be done. We're planning on disclosing what happened and asking whomever may take him to sign a statement saying that they understand. He's a great dog and the last thing I'd want is to see him put down for one mistake. Things need to move quickly though b/c I don't think it's fair to be leaving him outside all day (it's in the 70s-80s here but he's not used to it). Ugh WHY did this have to happen? We all love him so very much and it just breaks my heart.

Thank you all so much for your insight- it's really tough dealing with this :(

Very interesting. Do you know if your vet ever had him neurologicaly tested or did a CT or MRI of his brain? I had a child with brain trauma from birth who had seizures when he was a baby (fine now) but Alot of tremors or seizure activity can be caused by problems in the brain tissues. He could have a tumor in there or another problem that caused him to react that way. If that is the case it isn't his fault at all. It could be that the attack itself was him reacting in a seizure type trance. I think I would check into his health problems a bit more especially if it has only been 6 months since his last problem. My Doctor told me that my son can be fine and they can see no brain trauma but he still could have seizures anytime for the rest of his life, he's 11. It's worth looking into.

Good luck to you and your family. I also have a 2 year old, and this is an eye opener to me. I love my dogs, but my children come first. Best wishes to you and a speedy recovery to your son. It is very hard to see a child that age in pain and for them not to really understand the situation. I am sure it is truely heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your son.

You might try contacting the Boxer Rescue in Los Angeles. I have seen dogs there that seem to have more issues than Zeus does so they may take him.

I agree though that this may be a medical issue. Its odd that that this would happen out of the blue without any previous display of potential bad behavior.
