Poor Bodhi... he spent the day at the vet's under anesthesia, woke up at 3 & had another, they put him back under until 5:30. He loaded him up with meds and we took him home with instructions for upping the dosage over the weekend and if he continues to seize, take him to the emergency hospital. Well, now my husband is on his way to Animerge with him. He had 3 more seizures at 7:45, 8:45 and 9:45 (approx.). We've both been up with him since 2:30 this morning. My kids are a wreck - we had to put our boxer/dobie mix, Tyson, to sleep 1.5 years ago and they're afraid it's going to happen again - but he was almost 12 and Bodhi's only 2. I can't blame them, I feel the same way. I'm so upset - he's so beautiful and loving and tonight it's like he couldn't bear to have me touch him for longer than a couple of seconds.

It all started in February, almost a year after he fell out of the Explorer coming off the highway (another looooong story). My vet said the seizures could be from scar tissue on the brain from that incident, and the timing is about right for that, from what I've read. His seizures were very sporadic and he would go for months without having any. Then this...

What kind of toll is this going to put on his heart, brain and body, in the long term? I'm so afraid of losing him, but we can't bear to see him go through this.

Oh - I should add - about a month ago, he had his blood work done and the Pheno levels were low, so the dosage was upped to 1 1/4 pills, 2x day. Ever since then, he's done this 2 weeks ago and now this time - and it's worse than the last.

Just needed to vent - my heart is breaking, but I have to hold it together for the kids.

I'm considering finding an acupuncturist for him - I've heard that it has helped in other cases of seizures. Also, read alot about Rescue Remedy and how that helps to calm him and shorten the post-ictal phase of his seizures.

Thanks for listening...

You have to be careful with phenobarbitol because it can cause liver toxity - that is what happened to our Mya and she started having cluster seizures. We brought her to a veterinary neurologist who ultimately put on a high dosage of potassium bromide which was slowly lowered to her optimal level once her seizures were well controlled. I know firsthand how frightening it is and how helpless you feel, but it does take time to find the right medication and/or combination of drugs, so try to hang in there. In the interim, keeping you in my thoughts and praying that your furbaby feels better soon - Cathy

I walk a dog. .

. . .who has grand mahl seizures about once every three months. I experienced first hand what it is like and it is sooo scary. I do know that phenobarbitol is dangerous for the liver and Buddy was taken off of them recently. She is now taking him back to his acupuncturist he had before. He is doing well with it, as he was before. She has taken him before for months on end and he went without a seizure for almost a year. She also said that when she stopped, she noticed the seizures coming back on a more regular basis. Hence, the reason to take him back to her.
Anyhow, it works for my client and her dog, so perhaps it will work for your precious boy:)
You have nothing to lose and everything to gain, right? I say do it. I would do whatever I could to help my boy through it.
Goood luck to you:) Keep us posted please?

Bruce

So sorry to hear about your baby. Our Bruce has seizures at least every two weeks he's now 11 months old and it has been happening since he was 4 months He is now on 10 tablets a day each tablet equals 2 there the little white ones and then he's on two capsules to act like a traqulizer We are very worried as to what these tablets are doing or even what effect they are having on his brain when he has the seizures he will have about 6 a day lasting 4 days. They used to be a lot worse The vet has just put him on another tablet and he tryed to have a fit before but it was like he was really fighting lets hope the new tab is working we do not want to have him put asleep as hes such an happy fellow when hes not having them and it is like saying would you put your child down hope your dog gets better
