Gunnar you were special from the moment we first held you. You took over our hearts and helped us appreciate what was good and right in the world. I feel so lucky to have spent almost every waking hour with you during your brief stay in this world. If there was somewhere to go and it was possible for you to tag along, there you were right by my side waiting. Sometimes it was baseball practice for your skin-brother or ballet lessons for you skin-sister, but wherever it was you were happy to share your time with us. You always drew so much attention and brought smiles to so many faces. There’s a little boy at the preschool who asks for you every time he sees me and is disappointed when I tell him that you’re at home taking a nap. One of your favorite things to do was walk to the bus stop on your leash and wag your little nub like crazy when the kids filed out one by one. You had boxer hugs and slobbery kisses for each and every one!

You made friends wherever you were. During your many vet visits and emergency hospital stays you never held the poking and prodding against the vets or technicians. When I’d come to visit you during your hospital stay they’d say “Oh Gunnar, he’s the sweetest puppy”. Everyone who met you was touched by you in some way; you were like a ray of sunshine.

We tried so hard to figure out what would cause you to become so violently ill, but you stumped the many doctors who tried to help you. I wanted so much for the illness to go away, to find the magic solution for you but it just didn’t come in time. Even your breeder stepped in to come to your aid and she and her vets did their best to heal you too. We missed you this week while you were away and would look forward to the reports from the breeder about your progress. She was hopeful because you were eating, playful and up to your old tricks. It didn’t take long for you to win her heart all over again. You had one last happy day of play and then it was your time to leave peacefully in your sleep.

It must have been your time my sweet Gunnar, but it was much too soon, and our family will be forever changed. We will miss hearing the noise of your jangling doggie tags as you followed us throughout the house. We will miss your silly antics and playful teasing. There’s a big empty pillow that you loved so much still waiting for you in the family room and each time I see it I can almost see you lounging lazily having silly puppy dreams. You will always be in our hearts and I hope you know how much we loved you and always will.

I am so sorry you had such a short amount of time with sweet Gunter. It sounds as though you gave him some wonderful months, though. That he was so happy should bring you comfort.

So very saddened

I am still shocked and so very sad. We thought he was pulling through and then, he didn't wake up this morning. The breeder cannot explain it, except that she knows that we really tried to fight this mysterious illness that finally overcame him. She did her level best too.

I just don't know how I will explain it to my children, they are so young (7,5,2). He's only been with the breeder 3 days and they constantly ask when he's coming home. I just pray for strength to help them through this difficult time. Things just won't be the same without our Gunnar.

Thanks to everyone who's been so supportive and helpful. Your kindness has not gone unnoticed.

I, too, was shocked to read this post. I'm sure Goliath Knowles and Baxter will take him under their wings and take great care of him. ((hugs)) to you and your family.

Poor little baby!

Oh, this post brings tears to my eyes! Poor little Gunnar, gone before he had a chance!

Titus, you be good and watch over this little guy! Don't teach him any of your bad habits.

Godspeed Gunnar!
