Does anyone know of a place to get Otomax instead o fhavingto go to the vet? What about other remidies for chronic yeast in the ears?

Otomax is by prescription only because it contains a steroid. Tresiderm (unsure of the spelling) is what was typically prescribed for Lexi's yeasty ears. She had real bad yeasty ears and they would crack and bleed and swell inside. We ended up having to rotate between Otomax and Tresiderm for up to 8 weeks trying to get hers cleared up. Yeasty ears are awful and hard to keep clear.

Sometime ago, JulieM posted about a natural ear wash that is supposed to be great for yeasty ears. You may want to do a search to try and find it. The only solution we could find to clear up Lexi's yeasty ears was to remove all grains in her diet. She has had yeast free ears for a year and a half now :)

I just wanted to add a little caveat about otomax....
Last fall we were treating both our boys with it for subtle ear infections. After about 2 days on the med, Tango, my 10 year old could not hear!!!! Couldn't even hear the doorbell. I freaked out. I discontinued the otomax immediately and his hearing was back in about 3 days. I mentioned it to the vet the next time we were in and he said that maybe his ears were just full. This was not the case IMO. The dog couldn't hear a darn thing. Needless to say Tango won't be getting that drug again. My golden had no problems however.

You should do a search on what Aimee recommended-usually ear infections are caused by something (usually allergies-but sometimes just from getting the ears wet). Also, I changed Baylee's food and within about 2-3 weeks her ears were clear and have been since. I didn't use Otomax in Bay's ears, we used Panalog ointment (it has another name now-Animax I think it is called). I would just massage it into her ear and the infection would go away. But, right after I stopped it about 1 week later she'd start itching again. That's when I finally decided I had enough and changed her food.
Good Luck,

Jaimie

What kind of food do you have your dog on now? Baylee had other allergy issue and so did Brit so I put them on Wellness. But it all depends. We had my girls on Lamb and Rice and they still had problems. Look at the main ingredients in your dogs food-usually it is either the meat-like beef or the grains-such as corn.

I totally agree with Jaimie. Jesse had nutritional problems one of the symptoms was a yeast infection in her ears.

Did the vet do a swab and see exactly what type of infection there was? If so, was it just yeast or was there some bacteria present? If it was just yeast, conofite is something that works very well. But if there was bacteria as well, the otomax will be needed to clear it up completely. You can of course try switching the food and cleaning after all baths or swimming to keep the moisture from the ears if it's not food related. But with boxers having so many allergy issues I would try the different food first and see if it helps.
