When I take my white boxer Clyde out, who is 1½ years old, he barks at anyone he sees and all other dogs. The hair on his back stands up and he tries his hardest to get to them, but then when they try to pet him and runs between my legs. When other people walk there, dogs and they are off the leash he tries to attack them when they come near us. Usually I can pick him up and he is fine, but if the other dogs start to smell our small dog Max, he scratches me all up and tries to get out of my arms. Last night he attacked two other dogs when he got off his choke chain when I was holding him. It is embarrassing when other people are outside and so are we. What can I do to correct this behavior?

Choke chain

Well, if your dog is acting this way, You should definatly not have him on a choke chain or anything he can slip out of - try a harness, you have much more control because you have a hold of him by the body not the neck and if you pull the leash up the front legs are off the ground = less power that he has to pull away from you - I am not saying to lift him off the ground, I was just explaining how a harness works.

How do you act when a person or a dog comes around you guys? if you are telling him " its ok, good boy etc." to calm him down, all you are telling him is that he is good for acting this way even before he does it.

It sounds like he is nervouse and scared of the people he see's if he is hiding between your legs when people try to pet him.

try and make him sit when there are other other people/dogs around and give him treats when he acts calm and the first sign that he is starting to get excited stop and try to get his attention - teach him good things come from ignoring other things or just paying attention to you gets him good things.

Do you keep going for the walk when he does this?
You might try to walk until he starts to act like this and then stop the walk when he acts badly, but I think this would only work if he really likes his walks and if you start doing this right next to your house then build up the distance away from your home, maybe even ask someone to walk by, or even a friend to try and help you with this.

But the best thing to do I think would be to read a book or consult a professional if the info you get from people doesn't work or if it starts to backfire on you.

hi there, my 2 are funny on the lead aswell, not that i can walk them together beacuse they are nuts!!! but that is another story......hehehe...... ive been told its fear aggression, Roxy has been like it from when i got her at 8 weeks and started to walk her on the lead. Apparently, like i said its fear aggression because she feels restricted on the lead... this prob wont help you but your not alone....... Melzee, Oscar, Roxy

My dog loves other dogs, but for some reason they don't like her. My mom's dog absolutely despises Roxy and all the other ones just hide from her. I think it is b/c she is SO excited and clumsy. But that is just a guess.

When I take Clyde to my parents house he plays all day with there dog, and my girlfriend's dogs. He tries to play with other dogs when i take him on a walk and they don't want to, being a boxer he slaps them and that is when everything go wrong.
I have been walking him on the harness and trying to get him to sit when other people and dogs around. The getting him to sit is really hard when he is jumming around and barking at people.
I'am not giving up till he get's along with other people and dogs.
