Like others have stated, I have always been warned about how places like pet-med expess (and others) store their product's, where their product's come from, the efficacy of their product's, etc.... Merial will ONLY sell to liscensed veterinarian's. Merial does guarantee to cover the cost of heartworm treatment and several different types of intestinal worms if your pet's is diagnosed with any of them while taking heartgard. However, they will only cover the cost IF the heartgard was purchsed from a liscensed vet, they will not cover it if you bought it from an online store.
My vet decided to price match some of the online stores if the clients ask and can show proof of the cost from the other place. They decided to do this for 1)obvisiouly they do not want to lose the money and 2)they want to know that the products owners are putting into there pet's mouths are guaranteed and were bought from a reliable source. I would call your vet back and ask to speak to him/her personally. Ask them if they are so dead set against these online stores then WHY won't they price match these products for their clients?????
I personally started buying a few things like Glycoflex III and 3V-Caps from a place online (they also have a free catalog you can request) because I can get them MUCH cheaper than from my vet. The name is KV Vet Supply and their website is www.kvvet.com
They supply medical products, medications, and a variety of pet products to animal hospitals but, everyday pet owners (like us) can also take advantage of the lower prices they offer. I personally feel a little more comfortable ordering from them because they do supply hospitals with their products. They offer free shipping and handling on most products if you spend more than $40.00 (which I always do.) From what I could tell when I just compared the pet-med express and KV Vet Supply prices for heartgard, KV Vet offered it at a lower cost. However, I doubt Merial would offer their guarantee even if it was bought from KV Vet (i'm not sure.)
I agree it is really nice to be able to spend the money we save on x-tra goodies and toys for our baby's!!!!
