I have a 4-1/2 month old female boxer. We moved into a new house about 3 weeks ago and it seems she has taken a few steps back on her going outside to potty.

I crate trained her when I first got her and she did pretty good. We had an up stairs apartment (the stairs where inside) so she didn't have a door to go to. I would take her out a lot to avoid accidents and give her a treat when she came back inside. I stopped giving her treats when we moved into the house b/c she seemed to have the hang f it; although I would always praise her. I also quit putting her in her crate. She hasn't been in her crate in about a month and a half.

The past couple of weeks we have had some accidents (especially with #2) in the house. So, I decided today that I would start putting her in the crate when I leave to avoid these accidents. I was gone about an hour and when I got home I could hear her barking all the way outside! I came in and there was a little blood on the floor. Naturally I freaked out! I come to find out that in the she broke one of her baby teeth off trying to get out of the crate while I was gone. On top of that she did #2 in the crate (which she would never do when I use to leave her in there). I feel like a horrible Mom!

What can I do to help her get back into the swing of things again? I started praising her and giving her the treat again today when she used the restroom out side.

She also gets a little tricky and will go #1 outside and then when I let her back in the house she goes #2.

I thought about trying a bell on the door to see if that will work. The only time she clearly lets me know she needs to go outside is in the middle of the night. During the day she doesn't make it so obvious. She usually sneaks in the other room while I am not looking and leaves me a surprise!

Any advise is more than welcomed and appreciated!

Thank you! Jamie & Zoe

Your boxer is still a puppy! Moving into a new home can cause a setback on a house trained dog, never mind a puppy. I would start treated her like a brand new pup. I'm an sure that she will soon be back to normal.

Good luck!

potty training

Our female fawn 13 weeks will sneak upstairs to a room and go #1 and #2, we have to follow her all over the house when she is not in her crate, I have heard some same when ever you go from room to room, take them with you on a leash? I haven't tried this yet, she knows where the door is, we make the routine out the door, to her special spot in the corner of the yard in the pine straw, I always give her a treat and praise her.....yet she will be downstiars right next to the door, but she will go all the way upstairs to a room and go....I can see if she was going right at the door, but all the way upstairs? can't figure it out......

Keep the routine I guess and don't let her out of your sight.

Good luck

When Sindee was that age up until about five months old she was always on leash if she was out of her crate. I did not trust her to be alone in the house. They do not fully understand to go outside. Sindee is nine months old now and she is still not allowed to go to the back of the house alone. She is allowed to be in the room with us or the study where her couch is located. Good luck and just keep her in sight and train your self and everyone in the house to watch for signs of potty time.

Something a little different

Starting this week I started putting her in the master bathroom during the day with a bowl of water, toys, a bone and her bed. She has done great! I picked up everything I thought you would destroy. I was worried about her scratching the door or cabinets but she didn't. The amazing thing is she didn't go potty!

I have started her training all over again giving her a treat and lots of praise when she goes outside. She hasn't had any accidents in the house this week. She even came and told me she need to go potty (She put her front feet on my lap barked and went toward the back door looked at it and then looked back at me. She went straight out did her business and let me tell you there was a major celebration)!

I think going back to the basics and not giving her too much space to soon will be the solution to this problem.

Thank you for all the input and suggestions!
