I find it very APPALLING that people are giving breeders and rescuerers grief for having the best interests of the DOG and NOT THE OWNER in mind.

Exactly and to make my most favorite quote of this thread that I believe I have now used three times:
Owning a dog is a PRIVILEDGE NOT your RIGHT!
Yes everyone in the freeworld has rights, including I believe, any living creature on this earth. Dogs have a right to the best home they can get, and who is ensuring the rights of these dogs? Breeders and Rescues.

Jen, as I also stated previously, I know many many many working boxer owners who have been Very successful in providing the best possible home. Quality time spent on socializing, training and exercise mixed in with tons of love is the answer, and it sounds like you are giving your boxer just that. Good for you, you have found the key to being a Priviledged Owner.

As for petstores and puppies, I assume you were not aware that petstores get the puppies from BYB and Millers, but I do hope now you will take the time to educate yourself on the issue. It creates more harm than good for people to feed the profit cycle for these manufacturers of dogs. The more $ they see the increase in production happens, and God help those poor defenseless mother dogs. And yes, it is scarey that petstores do sell to just anyone, Financing Available in most cases. Although your Boxer did get a good home, the other side of the coin is, Have you considered the fate of some petstore puppies? Scarey thought considering what goes on in this world.

Not that this is the point of this thread, but just to add my two cents about petstores.

We didn't know any better when we got our first Boxer, Clark, from a pet store and you know what - he came from Oklahoma too. He died before he hit a year and a half. It was not a pretty disease either. He was sick a lot of the time and we spent a lot of money caring for him and had a lot of heartache when he reached the end. I hope for the sake of mother dogs, puppies and all the dogs living in horrible conditions in puppy mills that Johnson99 will not give up and go to a pet store or BYB. We learned our lesson the second time and got Wagner from a reputable breeder.

I'm not saying any of this to offend you, Jen, you sound like a very good doggy mom. Just wanted to share my experience with a pet store puppy.

Christina -

I saw your link and prepared myself for more photos. Thanks for not having anything jump out at me!!

Jen -
again, i just want to reiterate that i am NOT judging you as a mom, or blaming you for buying your maggie at a petstore. just please realize the destruction that pet stores cause to hundreds of thousands of animals each year.

again, please do not frequent stores that sell live puppies/kittens.

I had seen in another post that your pup came from a pet store, and I knew it would only be a matter of time before the pet store posts appeared. I always hate to see anything negative directed to a new, friendly member. I hope you understand that the posts are not intended to make you feel unwelcome. Obviously you love your dog, and there is much that you can learn and contribute to on this board full of boxer lovers. I hope these posts won't turn you away from us. They are not intended to be an attack on you personally, but it is really important to most of us on this board to educate people like Johnson99, and any others who might stumble upon this thread in the future, about the importance of using a reputable breeder if you want a puppy. Our purpose it to educate, not criticize. Although I've been aware of the link between pet stores and puppy mills, I really didn't know about the problems with "back yard breeders," especially those that don't seem to be in it for money and love their dogs, but they do a great disservice to the breed by not understanding the importance of health testing and planning breedings to improve the breed. I never would have understand that without the great, knowledgeable people here. Stick around and learn from these wonderful people and share all of your silly boxer stories with us -- I'm sure you have plenty already with your Maggie!

I defintely did not mean to attack you, Jen, just wanted to share my experience because it is a perfect example of why pet store dogs are not the best choice for anyone involved (except the pet store who makes money selling sick dogs).

You really do sound like a good dog mom, I was not trying to attack you personally, just didn't want someone else to buy from a petstore and have the same experience as we did.

Jen-

Like everyone else I also did not mean to attack you and I am sorry.

But it bugs me to no end about promoting BYB through buying pups from petstores or knocking breeders and rescues. I am sure that was by no mean your intentions.

I also felt bad for pups in a petstore and would have considered buying one IF i did not work so closely with the rescue. Most of the puppies that come into rescue are from BYB and due to health issues because they do not health test the dogs- it is too expensive.

This site is great for information and to share wonderful boxer stories.

I also think that you are a good mom to maggie.

Subi is also looking at Total Hip Replacement if this Cocedin (sp)does not help her, she was diagnosed with HD on Monday, VERY SAD DAY FOR MOMMY. She, the rescue and I believe, is from a BYB.  smashicon because of her health issues. So no running at the doggy park for her for a little while, she will have to make due on a 25 foot leash :(

This is just ONE of the problems that can occur from having a pet store pup or NOT going through a reputable breeder.

To VTBoxrfn & Jen72

Thank you so much for reiterating what the rest of us feel. Yes I think we all want to grow more knowledgeable about our boxers. I don't know anyone who knew the problems with Back Yard Breeders and pets stores when I was growing up. Maybe it was where I grew up but I don't believe the information was available, probably unless you knew a professional breeder personally. I would say only in the last five years has the public and the media really focused on these issues.

Our first boxer was from a pet store too, I didn't know there was a problem with purchasing from them. Luckily he lived long and taught me how special this breed is. That was about 15 years ago. We also thought we wanted to breed and we didn't know what we were doing then either and we learned that we shouldn't be trying to breed our boxers. You learn through education, research and unfortunately sometimes you learn by going through something traumatic.
