I am suppose to pick up my puppy in a week and they will be 7 1/2 weeks old. I spoke with the breeder today and she told me that my puppy is one of the smallest in the litter and maybe the smallest in the litter. Is there something I should be worried about or concerned about since mine is one of the smallest puppies? She said she took them to the vet a few weeks ago for deworming/shots and the vet said they were healthy little puppies. I asked the breeder how much she thought he weighted and she said around 5lbs at 6 weeks? Is that correct weight? Let me know if I should know of something or be looking for anything in particular. Sorry just a little worried, that it might mean he's sick/unhealthy etc.... Thanks in advance.

That does seem a tad small, but there can be lots of reasons. He may have some larger siblings that are big pigs. :D Be sure to take him to your vet for a complete new baby physical and heart check for any murmurs. Many puppies have baby murmurs, that they do outgrow, but these are things you want to get checked out first thing.

I have seen many pups that were the smallest in the litter at this age and end up the largest, so you just never know.

Enjoy that new baby!!!

I don't think you have much to worry about. Our Laila came from a small litter and I would say she was about 5lbs when we picked her up at 8 1/2 weeks. She is now almost 4 months old and is 17lbs. I just had her at the vet on Tuesday she is very healthy, and has almost doubled her weight in a month. The vet was very pleased with her growth, so just take yours to the vet when you get her, have her checked and I am sure she will be fine.

Congrats on your new baby!

I agree with Cheryl, take him to your Vet for a check up that day if possible,He may just need some TLC, but have him checked out.Hanley

Our furbaby was the smallest in the litter, and still may be considered small by some standards (11 months; 46lbs), but I couldn't care less. She is our healthy little luv bug, and her small stature just means more room in bed for hubby and I ~ Cathy

My Daisy was the smallest in her litter. Her brothers and sisters were all about 2 lbs heavier than she was. We brought her home at 7-1/2 weeks old and she was only about 6-1/2lbs!!! She was so tiny. She is now almost 2yrs and weighs about 53lbs.

Good Luck!!

Asia was the smallest in her litter - she was the only girl, and when we saw all the boys, they were a couple of pounds bigger than she was, we were told that her brothers were hogs!

I would say not to worry, and Congrats on your new baby!! :)

Hi, Our boxer was tiny also. She is still short by AKC standards (19 inches) and she weighs 48 lbs. My wife and I think she is the perfect size for us. Especially since she thinks she is a lap dog like our chihuahua and yorkie.
