Knuckles is 3months old and i recently started to notice that his right eye gets rather blood shot when him and i play or when i take him out for a run. after he relaxes a bit it goes back to normal but i was thinking it was odd that only 1 of his eyes does this.

it dosn't seem to bother him and we have a vet apt for booster shots coming up in a week and i'll ask about it then, but has anyone else experiancedthis with their boxers?

One of Calla's eyes gets more red than the other and I asked my vet about it. She said that Calla has a third eye lid in that eye and there is no pigment. I am not sure if this is right--Has anyone else been told this?--but she said it wasn't serious. It doesn't seem to be as bad now that she is a little older.

Blood Shot Eyes

Hello,
My 7 year old Boxer (today is his birthday in fact 8/31) always gets very red blood shot eyes when he gets "stressed out". Maybe this is your dogs case. I have spoken to my vet about it several times and he said it is nothing to be worried about. Some Boxers just handle stress differently. You should just keep an "eye" on it and as long as your Veterinarian is not concerned about it don't worry, your dog will be just fine..

Chances are that he has one unpigmented haw (third-eyelid). All dog have third eyelids on BOTH eyes, and these are normally pigmented. Some dogs though, may have one or both unpigmented (white) and these will become very red when the dog is exercising or excited (during teething too). Basically any time the blood is really pumping. Probably the same thing happens to dogs with normal (pigmented) haws, but because they are dark coloured, we just don't see it.

Here's a good site with an illustration (scroll down to about 2/3 of the way down the page): http://www.worldwideboxer.com/PAGE6.html

Some dogs (whites in paticular) do have unpigmented third eyelids. I believe they are called haws? Since there is no pigment, when the dog runs around a lot or gets excited the blood collects and makes their eyes appear very red. I guess its possible for one haw to be pigmented and one not. Can you look next time and see if its the eyeball itself, or the haw that is red?

I think it could be there haw( third eyelid) that is not pigmented. samson has unpigmented haws and his eyes always look red. nothing to worry about for samson. that is just him.:)
