Omg The Stink!!!!

I've been complaining now for some time about Baxter and how badly he stinks. I had our vet check him out and they could not find anything. His ears are fine, anal glads or teeth are fine too. I've changed his food and he still smells!!!! I noticed that his underside is black. I don't know what he does when he's outside. My husband said that he digs and tramples bushes but is that enough to make him this stinky???

I read somewhere that I can try bathing him in a mixture of 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon mild dishwashing liquid. Has anyone tried this and does it work?

That is a common mixture to remove the oil released from a skunk spray. To get the best affect from this combination you need to apply it to DRY hair and then wet and work into a lather.
Seems a bit overkill for an otherwise healthy dog who smells. While one bathing with the combination wouldn't hurt I would be more apt to know what was causing the smell. Do others smell it or more just you?
Is there any type of skin infection? Any itching?
After a bath how soon does it come back or does it linger even after a "traditional" bath?
If the smelly culprit is an oil based substance then this will work otherwise I'm afraid that you will still be left with a smelly boy until you pinpoint the cause.

Others smell it as well. The vet can find no skin infection and when they smell him they they said he smells like a dog.

Could his bedding be smelly and he keeps "re-stinking" himself when he lays on it?

What was he eating before, what is he eating now, and when did you switch him over?

I called my vet and explained the situation. I mentioned Baxter's belly being black. The vet tech said that it sounds like yeast but couldn't be sure without seeing Baxter. So I made another appointment for this coming Saturday. Has anyone else's pooch suffered from yeast and can you tell me what your case looked like? What type of medication was perscribed, how long did it take to clear up and and has the condition reoccurred?

I would be very interested to hear what your vet says. Our five month old Gus also has an odor about him. It is what I would call an earthy smell. i have always thought it was because he digs up plants every chance he gets but my husband is just convinced the smell is coming from Gus's skin.

I haven't had yeast problems, but I've heard they're often mistaken for allergies and can be helped with dietary changes. Also, you can try wiping and soaking the area with apple cider vinegar. You can also give a few tablespoons of plain yogurt.
Other than that, I've seen "remedies" on the web for things like OX-E drops that claim to treat yeast, but I can't verify that. We did buy the OX-E Drops for Canine Papilloma Virus and it cleared it right up.

Good luck! Hope your dog gets better and unsmelly! Can you try keeping the dog inside for a while and getting him clean to see if the smell goes away?

My girl has had staph infections on her tummy and it gets black too. Also has a smell about her however only when I would snuggle with her could I smell it.

Hey! Gotta know about this OX-E stuff. Where can I get it? My mix has this too! I call it doggy herpes from doing too many dirty street girls. LOL He hasn't had a breakout in months, but when he does, the sores seem so painful. This might just be the one thing to help him.
