Joey's mom

Let me start by saying that this dog can leap so high that his head is at least 7 feet off the ground. This evening, my son was playing with the water hose in the backyard. He was holding it upwards and spraying it, making Joey leap into it (Joey LOVES that). I was watching and saw Joey fall once...not uncommon. He landed half on his side and got right back up and proceeded to do it again. He fell once again but this time, he did NOT get up. He landed on his side and his legs shot straight out, stiffened up and he started seizing!! In my panic, I screamed his name and took off running towards him. I think that terrified him even more. I tried to speak calmly to him when I got there but he was shaking so bad. He stopped after a moment, which seemed like forever, and got up, trying to run and fell down...again he got up and this time, he ran, almost drunkingly, around the house. He was obviously terrified. My son went one way and I the other to try to catch him. He made it around the house and stopped at the back door and just wanted to go in. I tell ya, I have never in my life seen that happen. I am guessing he did something when he landed on his side? I just dont know. Needless to say, we will not be allowing Joey to jump like that in the house now b/c we have tile floor. It was bad enough outside. So for now, Joey's in his crate, resting. I will give him a nice bath later and make sure he doesn't get worked up. This was just too scary!

I agree. I think I would call the vet just to be on the safe side. I hope he's feeling better. Sounded very scary.

What a poor baby, he didn't know what happened to him. I am sooo sorry you had to go through that. I hope he is feeling batter soon and gets good and rested. I too, would take him to the vet to make sure that when he fell on his side he didn't hurt something that could make this happen again. Prayers, wiggles and hugs from all of us.

I would say that a vet appointment should definately be in the plans. Sometimes when they exercise like this if they have an unknown heart problem, and boxers are prone to those, this is how they would go down and act. Not to scare you or anything but, seriously, I would think he should be evaluated by the vets as soon as possible.

I have to agree with debbie. samson has cardiomyopthy and one of the side effects is him passing out. although it has not happened yet. I am always on the lookout.
a vet appt is a good idea.

Debbie's advice is right on the money!! This sounds like it may be something serious, you just never know, and you can never be too careful. So sorry that Joey had to go through that, and you guys too..how scary!! Hope he feels better..let us know.

My aunt and uncle have a mini-pinscher, named Rudy. One day my uncle was carrying it for some reason when the doorbell rang. Rudy freaked out and squirmed out of his hands. He landed on his side and was having a seizure exactly as you described. His eyes were bugging out of his head and everything. They took him to the vet and he turned out ok. The vet postulated that Rudy got his wind knocked out of him and was very scared. He is alive and well now. Obviously there is a big difference between Rudy and your Joey, but judging from experience it appears it's not too uncommon for a dog to freak out like that after landing hard on their side. Still worth a trip to the vet though. Good luck and sorry you had to go through that.
