Ok everyone I need some help. I have 2 boxers and 2 cats. My female lily could care less about the cats. Every once and a while she will sniff them, but other than that she is all set with them. My male, Jax, is a nut. He starts shaking and twitching when he sees a cat. YOU CANNOT break his attention. Even if you are standing infront of him and jump up and down, his eyes are finding their way to the cat. Well, my cats are allowed on the table and the counters, mainly for fear of what jax would do if he caught one. On Sunday we were sitting at the table and Jax leaped onto the table and chased the cat. He of course was told no and put in "time out". But then an hour later he did it again, this time he made it all the way across the table and knocked everything over. And we did the same thing again. Sometimes he gets so wound up by seeing the cats that we actually have to kinda sit on him to get him to chill out, in no way are we hurting him, just restraining him. We have tried the shaker can, we have tried to give him yummy treats when he leaves the cat when we call him... we have tried everything that our trainer has recommended. So basically i am asking for any advice that you may have. He has caught one of the cats once and it was a bad situation. He didnt hurt her, but I think if i wasnt right there, he would have. and another thing, i have had the cats for years, jax just turned 1. He has been around cats since he was born. The breeder had cats that were in or around their whelping box and he has been around mine since he was 7 weeks old.

any help would be great!

thanks
naomi, lily and cat eater jax!

I apologize for laughing but picturing Jax on the table going after the cat is priceless, too bad you didn't have a camcorder out and ready. Anyways, I know how you feel, my Jade has been around my 2 cats since I brought her home at 8 weeks and she's now 2 and will still tear after them. When I see the cats entering the room that Jade is in I try to distract her before she sees them or else I'll hold her collar while she watches them and praise her for sitting and just watching. Of course she still hasn't learned to just sit and watch (it's too tempting to chase) so I just make sure there is always a room open for my cats to hide in. She has caught them a couple of times and I do get nervous that she's going to hurt them but the most she has done is pin them down with her paw and then I break it up. If you find a solution for stopping the chasing I'd love to hear about it.

Just keep at it! Adam did that once. He was chasing the kitty, kitty went across the table, so did Adam! Now, this was the table in my FORMAL dining!! arg! I was so mad. I have a very nice scratch from a 80 lbs (at that time) dog trying to get the cat. Luckily, the table runner covers nearly all of it. ;) Now, Adam is so tall that he can rest his chin on the table so jumping isnt a prob any more :)

We had to cut a hole in our basement door because Buster wouldn't leave the cats alone. That's where their food and litterboxes are now too. Now that we have Riddick the cats have pretty much lost their tolerence for playing. It's funny to watch them chase the cats and see who gets to the hole first; most of the time the cats are able to make it and the dogs wind up smacking into the door! The cats both have their front claws removed but that doesn't stop them from trying to smack the dogs. Today one of the cats was cornered and she still managed to get a yelp out of Buster; she bit him on his nose!! haha
I just found out yesterday that Riddick jumps on the table too. Buster has never done anything like that so it was a real surprise to walk into the kitchen and see a dog on top of the table! I had put the babygate up to keep them all in the kitchen until they dried off from being outside. (potty time and we are having a sleet/snow storm) The first time I thought it was some freak thing that happened and I'd never see it again but no, not even 10 min. later he was on the table again! Both times he got drug off the table and a very firm "NO!" He hasn't done it since so hopefully it never happens again.

i feel much better

I feel much better knowing that I am not alone in this. And it was pretty funny, and surprising to see him jump over me onto the table. I just wish there was something else that we could do. I drives me nuts. Thanks everyone.... I appreciate the stories!
