My Patchouli is turning 10 on Oct 24th.
She is starting to, I think lose control of her back legs. Now when she gets up it seems that her back legs are not working the way they used to as she seems to have a problem getting them to straighten out. We are taking her to the vet this week but I was wondering if anyone else has ever noticed this with thier boxer. I know she is old but am in denial I love her sooo much and don't want her to be in pain.

She could be having some arthritis in her hips or knees. Is she a normal weight? Your vet might prescribe Rimadyl or something similar.

My angel Ginger had degenerative myelopathy(sp).Paws crossed Patchouli can be helped with rimadyl or chondroitin.

Patchouli is a bit over weight maybe by 5-7lbs. She is still very active and loves to run with Jaegar...my other boxer who will be a year old in a few days...so you can imagine the energy she has and Patchouli does her best to keep up. Is Rimadyl a perscription? I know that I can get chondroitin in a drugstore.

Our Sophie is 10 and she is not as steady on her back legs as she used to be but this has been the case with all our family dogs as they get older. We have noticed with all of them that they loose some of the muscle defination in the back legs and tend to favour their front legs to help pull themselves up when lying down etc. Sophie also has a touch of arthritis in her right elbow which she is now on medication for and it has given her back some of her 'get up and go' :) So a trip to the vets sounds like a good idea.

Certainly something to check out. Glucosamine/chondroitin, MSM, and green-lipped mussels all can be quite effective for arthritis pain. There's also a product called Dog Gone Pain (DGP) that has gotten rave reviews lately. Be very careful with Rimadyl - it has been known to cause a number of severe side-effects, far more than any other veterinary drug, including death. It should only be given under close veterinary supervision, only after a full blood panel has been done, and only if blood panels are run at least every six months for as long as the dog is taking the drug. Thank you all soooo much for your imput. I Glucosamine today and have started giving it her. We visit the vet on Saturday and I will let you know what the she says. If I can go the natural route rather than perscribed I would prefer to do that. Thanks again...really appreciated!

If you have slick floors, you might want to get Paw Wax to put on her little paws to keep them from sliding.
