Or how hyper can they be? If you saw my earlier posts, you saw that my family and I have decided on finding a Boxer. Now, friends and family are scaring us by telling us that so and so (owners, trainers, shelters, etc.) all say they are too hyper. We are very committed to doing obedience training classes, homework, etc. I know we can put the time in for the training. I know if we do our work and we properly train our Boxer that our friends and families will love and our appreciate our Boxer too. But you can't change a dog's nature. Are we biting off more then we can chew? Everything I've read says boxers are active and exhuberent, but I haven't come across "hyper" as a common charaterisitic of Boxers. Is it?

High Energy

I would classify Boxers as High Energy. They are ready to go all night long :) I would never suggest someone get a Boxer until they spend some time with them. So get with someone near you that has a Boxer or two. Spend some time in their home and interact with the dog. Boxers are wonderful but they are a huge handful for someone unprepared. I am so glad you asking ahead of time :)

I agree boxers are high energy. I always say a tired boxer is a good boxer. If they are not exercised sufficiently they can have a tendency to get into mischief.

I have had 3 boxers, and they were never what I would call "hyper". Personaly, I don't like hyper dogs. NONE of my dogs ever jumped on anyone. They always are pretty calm in the house, unless the kitty is taunting them. The neighbors great dane is MUCH more hyper than any of my babies ever were. All of them went to obedience traing, I think that is the best thing that you can do for them.. Boxers respond well to the training and they love to make you happy. I think your puppy will adjust to whatever lifestyle you have. If you just exercise it daily and take it to puppy school, I think you will find that it is the best dog you have ever owned!
Have fun with your new pup! beericon

Ok, so what exactly does "high energy" mean. Our neighbors have a Boxer who we met for the first time the other night. We were on a walk and stopped to chat. Their girl, Annie, was definitely happy to see us, but only jumped up on us when we bent down and were playing with her. Otherwise, she just wiggled and kept on the move from person to person. I have no problem with that. I just don't want to get into a situation where no amount of training will stop our dog from jumping up on people, or sprinting around the house for hours.

In my humble opinion....

Be sure you spend sometime with the parents of the pup you are getting. Trouble is a small version of his father. He is still very hyper/happy to see everyone and anyone that will take that half a second to see him. Rowdy on the other hand<different parents> is very laid back doesn't get too excited unless Trouble starts it. Rowdy mother and father are the same way very relaxed and likes to lick.

But when the two of them get excited oh my goodness. Seems like the house is going to cave in and they are just 17 weeks old.

Both of them are great around kids and usually listen when we tell them to calm down or throw them in the back yard.

I am rambling now so I will shut up.

Just trying to help.

Hyper!

I rescued my Boxer. She is five years old. She is very well behaved in the house. The only time that she really livens up is when we go to the tennis court to play ball or when I take her for a jog. Other than that she loves to snuggle, cuddle, and give and receive kisses. I believe that with proper training your Boxer will be just fine. There was something that I saw oneday at the grocery store. I man pulled up with three Boxers in the back of his pick up truck. He got out of the truck to go in the store. He looked at them and said stay. The Boxers stood there like stagues until he returned. I stood there and watched with amazment. They never gave a second look at the passerbys. Now I call that disipline. I found myself more and more inlove with the breed after that day.

Completely Boxer Crazy
Im not sure if we are just lucky or if she had good parents but we are first time boxer owners and our little girl is almost 4 months old.....really the only time she goes a little "nuts" is when we just come home she waggles and snorts she has her natural tail she it goes crazy too. (we love it) Other than that she just chews on her toys and gets into everything ;-).......When shes around other people she just waggles and wants to play.....Im so happy we picked a "boxer" to be our first baby...besides my husband...shes my life ;-)

My 6-month old sounds a lot like Annie. I've always found boxers to be very good at assessing people when they meet them. If someone bends down and is obviously glad to see them, the boxer acts a bit more exuberant. If someone expresses no interest in them, they still wiggle around hoping to get noticed, but won't be as aggressive about demanding attention and will eventually give up. But when someone's REALLY excited about meeting your boxer, their enthusiasm knows no bounds! Our last dog used to express her pleasure by falling down in wriggling ecstasy when someone bent down to play with her. Rather embarrassing depending on where we were, but charming nonetheless. And here's one final thought--in the dog park where I exercise Georgie, it's the Labs who knock people down hoping that someone will throw the frisbee for them, not the boxers. They just want to be petted between romps!

Good luck, and I think it's always a good idea to meet a pup's parents and their kennel mates. My mantra is, a tired puppy is a good puppy, but boxers will always be able to summon up a reserve of energy to greet their favorite visitors with enthusiasm.

I wouldn't say Betty is hyper, just filled with piss and vinegar from time to time. ;)

She really needs to run around and exercise daily. However, Sunday the hubby and I were a bit hungover from the night before beericon and not really wanting to play with Betty. Well, she must have known becasue she kept herself very busy. I was planted firmly on the couch all day hurting very badly and from time to time she would come over and nudge me with her nose to make sure I was ok.

I can not say enough: training, exercise, training, exercise, training! They will keep your family and your pup very happy!!

Good luck!!
