Another thing I use that helps when they have a sore area (that's not a wound, just rubbed or irritated) is that cortizone cream you buy at the drug store. Not the ointment, it's greasy; but the cream. Scrapper sometimes scratches under his front legs (I almost wrote "arms") and it gets irritated - a little dab of that stuff and it's much better the next day, plus if you get the kind with aloe, it soothes as well.

My dog took alot of time to learn how to heal properly and we are still working on distractions. Flat collar, food rewards, good training methods, training consistancy and alot of patience will eventually get you to the point where the dog will walk nicely even past distractions. Right now Otto will heal perfectly by other dogs as long as they don't lunge at him (working on it) which is alot better than when he was constantly pulling and putting a hurtin' on my hand , arm and shoulder.

In the end I think it is worth it for the reliability and not having to take a training device with me.

You might want to try sewing lambs wool around the straps that are rubbing. I have one harness that has the lambs wool already on it and another one that doesn't go near the front legs.

Neosporin with the pain relief is wonderful:)

I too just bought new harness's for both my furkids. I also purchased a chain that is hooked together so I only use on leash. The connector has been great from me on walks because Maddie wants to pull your arm offsmashicon and Carson spends most of his time dragging his feet. So with one pulling and the other one going slow they balance each other and I can have a peaceful walk:cool:

I really must say....the harness Monty has, has been a god send........He's normally wonderful when walking on our own...just collar and lead... I never use the harness when we are on our own.......However...most mornings.... my sister and I walk our siblings and that is when the problems start.....they are fine in the woods or fields and off lead but when we are walking them on the pavement together they constantly want to be the leader.....since buying the harnessess they just don't pull as much....I'm not saying it stops the problem but how on earth it works I do not know....he,he....it just does.....maybe it's the pressure on the chest when they pull....it seems so strange to me....I would have thought the pressure on the neck from pulling would have been worse for them.

Anyway.....I certainly know the difference if one morning I forget to put Monty's harness on.

Oh...just to add too

neither Monty or Sophie have had any problems from soreness from the harnessess....they can be in them I guess up to two hours sometimes on our long walks but never any longer and when we come home they are taken straight off.....they are not tight either....just a smooth snug fit.

oh my goodness, after all those suggestions I just have to add mine. "Allerspray with Bittran ll "
Kaine had a .. heck I am not really sure what he had. It was a sore raw spot on his paw and the vet gave me some of the before mentioned to make him stop licking at it. So far so good

And the whole harness thing... small question, what exactly is that one that was mentioned, something about "no pull"??

Oh golly, when on a harness Kaine tears my arm off and I have to make sure I have my running shoes on, but if he is just in a collar I get to have control?

But like some of you, I too feel more comfortable with him wearing the harness for "catching/spotting" protection.

When I first got Cassius everyone told me to use a choke chain he was choking himself to death then the vet told me to try the pinching collar that didn't work either I tried the harness out of desperation because he was pulling so much he choking all the time I got and Aspen put it on and he instantly stopped pulling I have been useing it for 4 years now never had a problem.

jsut a random thought.where did you get cashes harness? Most pet stores (petsmart and petco for sure)will take them back. you can get your moolah back and buy Cash another toy or something.

The no-pull harness can be a training tool if used properly. Some use it as a restraining tool instead.

What it is is a harness that goes under the armpits but tightens when your dog pulls. They are labelled HOLT harnesses and come in a box. (There may be other brands). When your dog stops pulling they loosen.

They're extremely effective but if you aren't training your dog at the same time the only thing you're doing is making sure he isn't pulling when his no-pull harness is on. :)

Poor Cash!

That very same thing happened to my Zeke last summer we bought a harness that was supposed to stop the pulling ya it also stoped the skin from growing under his pits! It lasted for one weekend and in the trash it went I put neosporin in his arm pits and did some research on what will help with pulling! We now are using the pintch collars they look really mean and I was really hessitant on buying it but my Zeke has'nt pulled me since it will only pintch when they pull so it does work! The other day we went on a walk and had the ultimate test "a cat" and he looked at it and never tugged! I couldn't beleive it!
