Odor Control?

For those of you who let their boxers up on the couch: Do you use anything to help keep the furniture from smelling like the dog, or do you just say the heck with it?

Our Bongo is so snuggly, and he loves to sneak up on the couch and be in our laps. I'm not bothered by it, but my husband is worried that the furniture will take on too much of that "doggie" smell and wants to ban the pup from the couch. I thought about trying some Febreze (or a similar product), but it smells SO perfumey it makes my eyes water! I'd rather smell the corn-chip feet smell of the dog!

Does anyone have any other suggestions or remedies? I know that my husband is going to cave, eventually, and recognize that it's a losing battle to keep Bongo off the couch. So I'd like to appease him if possible and keep the furniture smelling a bit fresher. Thanks!

Eve and Bongo (who does not believe that he could ever smell bad!)

Brando always sleeps on our sofa's - but they're leather, so they're quite easy to keep clean. I know what you mean about the Febreze stuff - it can be a bit strong.

When I clean the sofa I use the proper leather cleaning stuff and usually put in a few drops of essential oils - something nice like lavender or orange - just to try and make it smell a bit fresher.

We always have an oil burner with essential oils in on the go aswell - which I find helps to take away any smells.

To be honest I don't think Brando smells all that bad - but I suppose you don't notice as much when you're used to it.

Doggie Odor

Hi,

I have 4 boxers and they are all couch potatoes. They get on the couch and bed all of the time. My house smells of boxer. To keep your couch from smelling like dog, I suggest getting a blanket to put over it. That is what I do. Then I just take the blanket off and wash it. I also burn alot of Yankee Candles to help with the smell, and just bought a new carpet shampooer to help freshen the carpets. Unfortunately, when you have a dog in the house, your house will have that "doggie" odor, no matter how hard you try to clean. I have finally accepted the odor and make the best of it. My dogs add too much to my life to worry about the smell!!!!

My guys stay off the couches only because my rottie is so big and takes up too much room and he smells more, I don't find ozzy smells at all? covers are good. I usually sit on the floor and cuddle. I think you can buy something at petsmart etc for odor too.

We just Fabreeze now and then, and hit them with the furniture attachments if we are shampooing the carpets. To tell you the truth, our teenage sons odor lingers on the den couch where they all lay around, more than the dogs, and we make him shower twice a day! I think they have a scentless Fabreeze now, I like the smell so I buy the regular.

With three small children in the house, dog odors are the least of my problems. (Just finished cleaning out a set of poopy britches and wishing I had a gas mask about now!) My fur-babies commandeer my sofas, favorite chair, bed, pillow.......an occasional spritz of Febreeze is about all the special treatment they get.

Re: Smelly Boxers!

We have tried several remedies to our space invader, Amiga...she's allowed on the couch or our bed when her special blanket is draped on the area where she'll be snuggling.

Also, we've encouraged her to use a pet bed next to the couch and our bed. Of course, in the middle of the night, she's got one ear & one eye open for any movement from us, and, whoops! she's right there in between us for the rest of the night.

PLEASE!!!....DO NOT use Febreeze. Febreeze has a chemical agent in it that can be toxic to animals. We used it several years ago in Amiga's pet areas and she got VERY SICK...hacking, wheezing, red eyes. She had to have her bronchial tubes washed out via a surgical procedure to find out the source of her breathing and coughing problem. The vet found a "foreign chemical substance" inside her lungs. Right around then, there were articals coming out about Febreeze and its effect on pets...very toxic. The minute we stopped using Febreeze, Amiga started getting better.

Amiga may have been allergic to the Febreze, but it is NOT toxic to pets. This myth was dispelled quite some time ago. Please read here for more information: http://www.snopes.com/toxins/febreze.htm

Our dogs are only allowed on the 2 sofas in our family room and I keep slip covers on them, I toss them in the wash once a week, but they are not allowed on the furniute in the living room so when we have people over thats the room we use.

I also use Fabreeze if I think the place is stinky but honestly I don't think boxers are smelly dogs in comparison to some other breeds, except when they get wet. :)
