Odd snorting

I know there was another post similar to this, but my question is a tad different. And who better to consult than my boxer pals. :)
Last night Tyson made this funny snorting sound. Like, for lack of a better phrase, he was trying to hack up a luge (sp?). He only did it once. I know that snorting and heavier breathing is normal for short snouted dogs, but this seemed a little different. And Tysons breathing is pretty normal. He hardly ever pants, unless he has been playing or running. He rarely snores. Just wondering if anyone else's babies do this or if its something to really be concerned about. Thanks.

I'd snort, too, if I was trying to hock up an entire Olympic sport. (sorry TT, you know I have no sense!)

I think you answered your own question, though. He may have actually just have been trying to de-phlegm. If its was a one time deal (like lifting his leg) I wouldn't worry, if it gets worse, you may want to mention to your vet. Bax does the same thing occassionally and so have other dogs. If he was normal afterwards, and hasn't done it since - I wouldn't be too concerned. (but watch where you step! )

Tara- was he exposed to other doggies when you were on vacation? Junior coughed like that when he had kennel cough so watch if it persists. He does occasionally do the "huck a louey" sound (the sound a person makes before spitting or getting ready to huck)
I agree with Cubby tho- I have never seen him attempt to eat a sled although we do not have much ice in socal.....

Loogie sounds too!!

It's funny you mentioned this as Sega was doing this quite often a few weeks ago. I even video taped it on my hand-held camcorder and took it with me to show the vet. Well, he did some chest xrays and found some minor fluid/irritation in the lungs and gave him some antibiotics. Well, Sega was like a completely different dog after that, he was so much better, but he started doing again this past week!!

Well, I just took him yesterday to a different vet that specializes in boxers (as I got tired of playing hit-or-miss with my current vet) and he told me that it was called a "reverse sneeze." He said that it had alot to do with the shape of the boxers nose, airway and the little thing that hangs down in the back of your throat (some technical term, huh?? :) ) Basically, he said that since he also had allergies, it is probably very similar to our "hocking up a big one." It's just alot of phlegm. He took Sega off of the steroids that my other vet put him on and we are going back for allergy testing next month!!!

Reverse Sneeze

I sent a pm about this. But a friend of mine her dog had the same problem and her vet told her it was reverse sneezing, allergy related. I watch her dog which is a sheep herding dog all the time and it is the weirdest thing. The vet said to try to massage his throat or blow in his nose (I don't know about that one) and it will stop. I do the massaging of the throat and it seems to work. But I never heard of it but she actually gave my friend some paperwork about it..... weird what dogs can get isn't it.

Roxy started doing this a few days ago. I woke up to her making that horrible noise at about 7 am. I brought her over by the couch and just kept petting her until I fell asleep again but she woke me up again from the same thing.
She had done this once before but it was an allergic reaction to orange remnants left on you fingers from Cheetos (that's another story). Her throat swelled up so she couldn't breathe and she broke out in hives. The vet gave us some medicine to take home in case it ever happened again.
I gave the medicine to her the other morning and it seemed to help. She could finally get some sleep. We weren't sure if maybe it was a reaction to the shots she got the other day. We took her in earlier in the week for her parvo and kennel cough shots. This was the first time she has gotten a vaccine in her nose instead of a shot and I wonder if this had something to do with it.

oh boy i thought i was alone! Cassius does that when he get REALLY excited, almost like hes hyperventalating (sp)...i just rub his chest and back and get him to calm down. i can tell that it really bothers and scares him. thankfully it hasn't happened in awhile because fankly it scares the crap out of me! i automaticly think he's gonna die....poor thing to have an overprotective mom! :)
