When I had my Kaitie in the vet for colitis, I was feeding Nutro Natural at the time. The vet said she was severely overweight and then she "prescribed" the special Science Diet for weight loss, I was so ticked, I walked out to the shelves, picked up the bag, read the ingredients, walked back into the exam room and told the vet "If I want to feed my dog garbage and cardboard, there are much easier and cheaper ways to do it." then said thank you, paid the bill and walked out. Switched to Chicken soup and new vet. Now no colitis, healthy coat and she even lost 10 lbs since last January!
My new vet trys to push the nutro natural or iams, but I told him I feed CS, and he said "Oh, well that is a much better food" :D I am working on converting him!

Unfortunately most vet offices need to be educated. I would suggest sending some info to the vet that you left. They will never change without the knowledge and reason as to why they should.

Remember most dogs grew up on Purina and Dad's and lived long lives. To the vet hospital Science Diet and Iams is better nutrition. It just is not the best nutrition. They need more education.

Sadly the vet office that I used is more like the human HMO clinics, it is all about quantity not quality. :( I am not too sure they would even care. My new vet though is always happy to read information about nutrition. :D I will have to get a packet together. I wanted to do one for our rescue, so that we can give it to the adoptive parents or just people who stop and ask us when we are out and about. Got my Christmas chore to complete now ;)

My friend used to work at a vet clinic and told me about some of the big incentives for vet clinincs to push foods such as science diet. Hill's Science Diet lines is made by toothpaste giant Colgate-Palmolive Co. Hill's has spent many years building its professional following. It spends hundreds of thousands of dollars a year funding university research and nutrition courses at every one of the 27 U.S. veterinary colleges. Once in practice, vets who sell Science Diet and other premium foods directly from their offices pocket profits of as much as 40%. Hill's employees wrote a widely-used textbook on small-animal nutrition that is distributed for free to vet students. Hill's also sends practicing veterinarians to seminars on making more profit from clinics and offers the only formal nutrition-certification program for clinic technicians. Also each year Hill's donates tons of free food for the pets of veterinary students.

Right now i have Clio on Nutro Ultra as well and she loves it, i have to say after almost 9 years of feeding her and being new to the board i'm wondering if i should switch her again? Also a big problem near me here in CT is that the only place to really go other then the Grocery store is Petco, and i've seen people mention Solid Gold and a few others like in this thread called Chicken Soup, i've never seen these, is it possible that they don't have these foods in the northeast? I don't mind driving to give clio the best food.

Thanks

They do have these foods in the Northeast. :) The problem is that generally they do not carry any premium foods (with exception of what you are currently feeding) in PetSmart and PetCo. You have to go to your local pet supplies stores or feed stores to find them.

Many of the dry dog food websites have a store locator feature to help you find a distributor in your area.

Good luck

At Dugan's first vet visit.. we received a "welcome pack" from the vet. In it was a bag of Purina Puppy Food and a bunch of other Purina treats!

I couldn't believe that a vet (who I had thought would be well educated about a dog's nutritional needs) would recommend such low-quality food!

That "welcome pack" went right in the garbage.
