I was discussing with my vet about having my dog neutered and I mentioned that I was interested in laser surgery. She told me that she didn't recommend it because it takes longer to heal and it can cause problems with the stutures. I was under the impression that the opposite was true. She told me she has experience using laser for neuters at other clinics and never saw the benefits. The clinic she works at now (where I take my dog) does not offer laser surgery. Is she only telling me this in order for me to have it done there? Maybe she is just not well informed? She did not know about Ace until I mentioned it (thanks to BW). (Also I had a question about his declaws and she started reaching in the back to feel for them lol) So I really don't think I am going to have my dog neutered there one way or another. (I am in the process of looking for another vet) But I am just curious to hear from other people who have had their dogs neutered with laser how their experience was with it. Thanks for everything.

Ava waas spayed via laser surgery. I was told that although more expensive it was less envasive and less pain. Also quicker recovery.
If your vet is unaware of the dewclaws I would definately be looking elsewhere if I were you.
Good Luck.

no experience with lazer surgery, but your vet sounds a little like she slept through all her canine classes, RUN away!!! Find another vet!!

Good Luck!!!

 Without jumping to conclusions about someone I don't know, but...

I must say that having a vet you trust and is very knowledgeable is so very important and this doesn't sound like your vet is that for you. I don't have DMV after my name so I pay someone that does. My vet is amazing! He explains everything and backs it all up with research. I have cried through the loss of two boxers to cancer in the same year, and it was nice having someone I trusted right there through it all with me.

I wish you luck in finding a great vet!

I agree with tanya22. Abby had laser surgury. She healed very nicely and quickly. A little more expensive but worth it.

Found a new vet

I went around interviewing vets and finally found one I like. She even has a boxer and told me she would waive the new patient fee if I brought him in. As far as the laser goes, she does both methods with her neuters, and told me the benefits of laser. Then said it was up to me whether or not it was worth the extra $65. She said mostly it would just be less pain afterwards and a less noticeable scar.

I had Jesse spayed with a laser and it was like she never even knew she was spayed. I have to look hard to see her scar and she does not even have any hair on her belly.
But, to be honest I do not think that I would neuter using a laser because it is not as major of a surgery as a spay. I don't think the extra expense would be worth the benefit.

I'm a big believer in laser - especially since boxers are so energetic. Laser neuter cuts the "downtime" down from 10 days to 3, no visible scarring, no sutures (surgical adhesive is more common). Bax was completely himself the next day. Laser spay is still a very invasive procedure, but again, downtime is lessened, scarring is minimal, no/fewer sutures, minimal occurence of post-surg infections, etc. I say go for it.

As for your vet, yeah...not really up to date on info. Shopping for a new one is a good idea.
