HodiePup

It appears that Hodie is a "spirited" chewer, and as he's gotten older, I've had to up the ante on the toughness of his toys. Well, I'm out of ideas. The latest toy that I got him was a 9 on the manufacturer's 10 point toughness scale. He chewed a boxer-mouth sized hole in it in about 45 minutes. I got him another toy made out of firehose material, we actually got about an hour out that. He chewed the feet off his cuz in under a half hour. Ever see what a wood chipper can do to a sapling? Well, Hodie could probably do the same thing, likely faster and more effectively.
The normal solution would be to get him something REALLY tough, eg deer antlers, but he's got virtually zero interest in them. He chews on his antler for about five minutes a day, total. He's had it for a month and it still looks brand new. I'll admit that I haven't tried a raw meaty bone yet, but that's for fear that, given all that meaty goodness, he'll keep chewing until his teeth fall out. I want him to be happy, so he's always got toys around, but my house is starting to look like a dog toy slasher flick.
I guess I'm looking for ideas on things that might fall somewhere between a cuz and deer antlers. Anyone?

I would definitely try a RMB. Have you tried rubbing some pb on the antler? My boys go crazy for both!

my mom's lab is a "spirited chewer", lol. she's bought him everything under the sun aside from animal products because of skin allergies. the nylabones last the longest for her, but he still chops them into pieces. they can be pretty expensive when you're going through them that fast- so she orders them out of the KV catalog and they're a bit cheaper... at least compared to the pet stores around here. i'm sure there's other catalogs with similar products and prices.

Pet Meds | Dog Supplies | Pet Supplies | Pet Products | Pet Supply

they offer free shipping over $50

he's currently carrying this around the house, minus the head and fins lol

Peanut butter on the antler! I hadn't thought of that. I'm going to try it tonight.
Hodie's got a Nylabone and a Kong, but it's almost as if he's not interested in anything he can't destroy. This is my second boxer and my first one, Cocoa (RIP, Coconut), preferred to carry her toys around as opposed to tearing them apart. So funny. For all the things she had in common with Hodie, there are just as many things that are different. What an adventure!

My weim was a lot like that. What finally worked was lacrosse balls. Tough enough that she couldn't pop them and slippery enough when wet that she couldn't grab a bite off.

I do a lot of fostering and I thought Rocky was a chewer until I had pits in my house. HOLY CRAP they chew.

I always have three things on hand:
1. Bullysticks - yea, they don't last long but they still definitely catch their interest. I get the braided ones for the pits - the quickets one dog has gotten through a braided one, 12" was 30 minutes.
2. Antlers
3. marrow bones - now I understand your concern about him going nuts - but what I do is get them from the butcher (these are dirty cheap by the way) and clean all the marrow out (otherwise it causes diarrhea) and try to scrape the most off the outside as I can, so they really aren't chewing or eating any of the marrow/meat - it's more just that smell is on there and it drives them to be 'interested' in the bone.

Hope you find something that works!

Try These:

GoughNuts Dog Chew Toy

My pit/boxer chews and destroys everything, BUT THESE!!! He loves them! I got the round goughnut and the long hot dog thingy. He carries them around and chews for hours! Plus they have a lifetime guarentee! Pricey, but a toy that will last for years!

I couldn't get Raine to show much interest in an antler either......
I put it in a bowl with a little bit of low sodium chicken broth and water. Stuck it in the fridge overnight.
She was in heaven for about 30 minutes until something else caught her attention. I'm out of chicken broth but will get more and hopefully have the same results. Just a thought.
I tried the PB too but she just licked it off in about 2 seconds and walked away.

Wow, some really great suggestions here. I'm happy to report that the antler/peanut butter mixture went over HUGE! In fact, Hodie is happily gnawing away at it right now. I'll definitely try some of the other ideas, just to give him some variety and I'll definitely pick up a Goughnut ASAP. We love a challenge!
Thanks so much for the help, you've made a goofy mutt very happy!
