Not sure he's REALLY a boxer

Hi.

I bought my wife a boxer puppy for her birthday. He was 10 weeks old at the time. He's about 5-6 months now, and I don't think he's looking like a full boxer.

I'll post a picture later, but for now just a little description. Henry weighs 49 lbs @ 5 months. His nose doesn't have the "pushed back" look (sorry I couldn't think of a better description) like the other boxers I've seen. His snout looks more like that of a lab than anything else.

To further compound my suspicion, the breeder STILL hasn't gotten me all the AKC paperwork. I can think of a couple possibilities:

1) He made an honest mistake and breeded his female (I did get to see her) with the wrong dog, and sold me a $350 mutt. He doesn't want to admit he made a mistake 'cause he wants to keep my money.

2) The dog hasn't finished growing yet. This I think may be unlikely, unless his nose is going to shrink back, or he's going to be incredibly huge.

I am obviously not going to return the dog, as he's become part of the family. He definitely acts like a boxer (punches me in the eye everytime I play with him - my pointer sure doesn't try that). I'm trying to decide if I should try to threaten the guy for my money back, take him to court, or wait a few more months and see what the dog looks like then. What do you guys think?

P.S. I do have his signature on a purchase contract describing the dog as a boxer. I'm pretty sure I'd win in court, I just don't think it'd be worth the time.

Without a picture it's really hard to say. I've seen alot of boxers that do not have the mush face. I've been told that it comes from poor breeding that it doesn't necessarily make them a mix. Another possibility is that somewhere in the gene pool something else slipped in. AKC papers do not actually prove that a dog is purebred. We had an AKC registered boxer that came into rescue that was definantly a mix without a doubt. Your papers are only as good as the person who filled out the paperwork to apply for them. It sounds as if someone totally unknowledgable decided to breed 2 boxers regardless of the fact that they did not meet the standards, did absolutely no health testing and therefore a litter of boxers were born just not boxers that meet the standard. If that's the case, I'm not sure you'd have much of a case in court. Good luck.

Rocky doesn't look like a purebred either. Trust me people seem to want to point that out to me all the time :rolleyes: However he is very boxer! He is very small for being male and his age. Although that could just be because he is slow to mature. He also doesn't have a smush face and large flaps. But he is a boxer no doubt and my baby no matter what :D

He's 57 pounds now, at 6 months. I'm starting to think he might be part Mastiff. Sorry, still no pictures yet.

His hair seems a little long (longer than my pointer's, anyway) and he sheds quite a bit. Is this a normal boxer trait?

What reason has the breeder given you for no AKC paperwork?
You know, if you have a signed contract stating the puppy is eligible for AKC Registration, you can lodge a complaint with AKC and that breeder can be suspended (if he is not already)

Boxers don't usually shed but I am sure there are some that are exceptions :)

Poorly bred Boxers have longer muzzles. The Boxer is a man-made breed and a breeder really needs a working knowledge of the breed standard to maintain that strong Boxer head. This is an item show breeders tirelessly work towards along with other goodies.

Based on the picture, I'm inclined to agree with you that he's probably not a purebred boxer. Whatever his background, he is a nice looking dog and I hope that you are enjoying him!

My Eddie sheds like crazy!! As do all of the 5 other boxers that I know personally! If there are boxers that don't shed I hope I get one of them next time

And for the picture of Henry, although I don't have a lot of experience with boxers compared to some people here at BoxerWorld. I too don't think he is a purebred, BUT he is a beautiful looking dog!

He is a great looking dog, however I have to agree with everyone else. He almost has a "golden" color coat. So I would go with some kind of lab or mastiff cross. He definitly has the wrinkled forehead like a boxer though! Gotta love that. I would be having some words with the breeder myself. Like what do the other puppies look like? Enjoy your dog because he is a cutie!

I would definitely say that pup is part labrador. I now have my first boxer and every dog I've owned before were labs.

As for the shedding, labs do shed but my boxer Zoe sheds too. I dont believe that they dont. Every one of them I've encountered sheds some, but the fur is so short its not easily seen. ;)
