not barking

Zeus just turned 6 mos. and is, I guess, going thru puberty. He has a new bark that reminds me of a 13/14 yr. old boy whose voice is just starting to crack. Anyway, I think he likes it cause he's starting to bark more now. He barks at every little sound, any stranger walking by our yard, and anyone standing at our front door.

One of the reasons I was so drawn to the boxer breed, aside from them being so darned cute, was the fact that they do not bark a lot. Our 6 y/o rottweiler, Moose, hardly ever barks. He does not bark when someone is at the door, although he does wander over to inspect, he does not bark at passing dogs. But he has been know to bark at motorcycles and men wearing cowboy hats (that happened the other day while we were driving home). Tyson only barks when he is playing, other than that I hardly hear a peep out of him, unless he is sleeping (boy can he snore!)

Our Joey boy has never barked. We have had him at least a few months now-(from rescue). He will finally growl when he plays with the other dogs, but we have yet to hear him let out a bark!!

We have just taught Scarlet to "speak", so she will bark on command. I did this by holding a treat and saying "speak" then I would bark like a dog. At first she just stared at me like I was nuts. I did that about 5 times in a row then would put the treat back into the box since she did not speak. After about 3 days of a few sessions a day, she finally figured out what I was trying to get her to do and low and behold she barked when I said speak. Of course she got the treat and lots of praise.

Otherwise, she just barks when she wants to play. I may start telling her to speak when someone knocks at the door.

WOW, I wish I had the no barking problem. Our boxers bark incesently.

thanks everyone for your replies....sounds like the boys bark more than the girls. My next one will be a boy, but that'll have to wait until after my son is born in September....they can be pals.
