Normal Behavior?

I am sure this has been posted in the past but I can't seem to find an explanation. Does anyone else's puppy stop when they are walking and lay down when they see another dog? Dakota walks pretty well on the leash (except for the occasional jumping) but whenever we are in full stride and she sees another dog she stops in her tracks and lays down. Maggie never did that, so this is new behavior to me. Anyone know why they do this?

Are you talking like laying down in a crouched "prey" position?? (like a lion, ready to attack)
Payton will do this at times too- usually when I had him at the dog park- before a dog would approach him.
He's never done it when we've been walking.

Well kind of, I guess. she'll be walking with me and then see a dog then sit and lay down on her belly - tail wagging the whole time. She started doing it about a month ago and has done it ever since.

when Duke (8wks) see's our outside dog joey (lab/retriever mix) he lays down on his back and stays there belly up until joey runs away then he jumps up and chases him then rolls on his back again...i just thought he was wierd but when he met my sisters dog sugar(corgy mix) he chased her around, i guess its some kind of instinct maybe? or a reaction to a bigger dog, even tho joeys not that big. My answers not so helpful i jsut thought id share. sorry so long :)

Splash does it sometimes usually with smaller dogs. He will lay down until the dog comes up to him and then they do the sniff game. He usually only does this when we are on our walks on the leash. He doesn't do this when he is at the dog park.

Not Diesel, that's for sure. He tries to jump all over every dog he sees to play.

I have to make sure he only walks past friendly dogs who enjoy his play style. Otherwise it'll cause a problem.

Biff has always done this too!

I remember once a man out walking his dog shouted over "You've got a boxer who thinks he's a sheepdog!!!"

There are times when Ali goes in full blown prey mode. She crouches down and is right ready to spring if I don't keep her close to me. Other times she just passes by like they are not there but that is very rare.
