no uti but slight trace of blood in urine?

I took 6 year old rescue boy Diesel back to the vet again today. Kennel cough is better, although he is still on 1 1/2 tablets of 500 mg Lincocin 2x daily. Neuter infection has cleared up. He was just neutered 2 weeks ago.

He has been having a little incontinence. He drips a little upon standing, when running, and sometimes while resting there will be a quarter sized puddle of urine left on his blanket. His urine has a strong unpleasant odor. It is a very strong, musky odor. I would also describe it as skunky. No visible blood in stream. No pain or trouble urinating.

Eats and drinks normal, a little slow going, but not lethargic. Gums look slightly pale to me, but they aren't white.

At the vet today they checked his urine in office, and the vet came back and said no sign of uti. No leukocytes, normal glucose, no ketones, negative bil, etc. However, he said the urine was slightly on the cloudy side. Also said that there were slight trace amounts of blood, but very small. He acted as if that was nothing to be concerned about. He gave me the lab printout, which states " 250. Ery/mL" when indicating the amount of blood that was found. Also, very small trace amounts of protein.

He palpated all around the bladder, and no abnormalities found, no noted tenderness or swelling.

Vet stated no uti, and since he was only neutered 13 days ago, wouldn't think it could be a hormonal decrease issue, since his hormones haven't even had a chance to completely drop.


The vet wants to wait a couple of weeks to see if it goes away on its own. After all, we've only had Diesel 2 weeks, so we don't know if this is truly a long term issue.

Does anyone have a clue as to what this could mean. The vet said after a couple of weeks, if it doesn't subside, he will do x-rays, etc. and check abdomen and bladder. The vet stated it could possibly be a few small bladder stones.

Does any of this sound like something to worry about? I don't want to put Diesel through any expensive or invasive tests for no reason, but am a little uneasy about finding ANY blood or protein, no matter how small or insignificant the amounts might seem.

Also, the smell of the urine was never really addressed.

The vet did offer to try antibiotics just in case a small infection is starting up. But I reminded him that Diesel is already on antibiotics, and has been for over a week. So, we nixed that idea and are waiting this out.

What should I do in the meantime? Any homeopathic preventions or remedies I should try? I can't stop worrying.

Did he mention anything about the kidneys? When we were looking for problems with Buster, he had some incontenence and some greenish leakage from his penis, he said the problem could be before or after bladder. I asked what he meant and he said it could be up towards or in the kidneys. Buster also had an elevated level of protein in his urine, but nothing huge. But, the vet was concerned about any protein and wanted to err on the side of caution so we sent the urinalisys off to a medical hospital/vet teaching school. We found out he did have an infection and put him on antibiotics. We are hoping that takes care of the problem, but only time will tell if that was the true problem. I hope you figure it out, I know how frustrating it is.

thanks for the response. He didn't seem to be concerned about kidney trouble, so I don't know what to think.

This is the clinic I normally use, but there are several vets there, and this particular one I am not real familiar with. My regular vet had the day off, so when i go back I'll make sure to see him instead. At the very least I'll get a second opinion.

Diesel has only been with us a couple of weeks so it is hard to say if his energy levels are significantly below normal for him. He is a really calm dog, and plays and runs very little, but he doesn't seem lethargic or sick. I tend to attribute his lack of boxer energy to the fact that he spent his entire life either chained up outside or in an outdoor kennel with no exercise. I don't think he even knows how to play, but we are teaching him.

I guess right now it is a waiting game, but I will spend my time researching any possible solutions.

When Pete was leaking: back in December, the urinalysis was borderline. The vet thought it might be the beginnig of a uti. I opted to treat it as a full blown uti. It was just before the Christmas holiday, we were traveling with Pete and wanted no further problem. It was defintily a uti. I've had cats all my life, and many of these infections are difficult to diagnose if caught early, as the numbers will be borderline. The symptoms are still there. As for the smell of the urine, that might mean a stone. Did they check for crystals? Stones can show on an xray.

I hope Diesel feels better soon. I think cranberry extract helps. I chose a holistic kibble to add to Pete's homecooked meals that contain this extract.
